HBO Max is developing an untitled Spanish drama inspired by Tor, the remote mountain community connected to three murders that remain unsolved.
Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the directing duo known as the Javis, will executive produce the project. The series comes from Goya winners Fran Araújo and Eduard Sola through Suma Content, in collaboration with journalist Carles Porta and Luminol Media.
The planned drama will combine mystery and suspense as it revisits the events and legends surrounding Tor. The community has continued to fascinate people because of the tragic incidents associated with it and the unanswered questions around the three killings.
Interest in the case was further fueled by Porta’s 2024 Spanish docuseries Tor, which deepened the intrigue around the community and its history. Porta’s involvement in HBO Max’s development now connects that nonfiction examination with a new dramatic interpretation of the material.

Calvo and Ambrossi board the Tor project following the Cannes success of their movie La Bola Negra, starring Guitarricadelafuente, Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close. The film attracted attention at the festival, earned the filmmakers an award and was nominated for the Palme d’Or.
La Bola Negra has also been selected as Spain’s Oscar entry, adding to the momentum around the directing pair as they take on executive-producing duties for the HBO Max development.
Guillermo Farré, HBO Max’s head of local original production, highlighted the combination of filmmakers behind the prospective series and the dramatic possibilities offered by Tor.
“This project brings together some of the most exciting creative voices working in Spain today,” Farré said. “Fran Araújo and Eduard Sola have an exceptional ability to create rich, character-driven stories, while Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi continue to push boundaries with their distinctive vision and ambition.”
He added: “Inspired by the extraordinary world of Tor, this series has all the elements of a powerful HBO drama, and we are proud to support these creators in bringing it to life.”
HBO Max expands its European slate
The Tor development forms part of HBO Max’s continuing push into European originals. The platform recently greenlit a French medical drama inspired by The Pitt.
Farré, a producer of Sirat, recently succeeded José María Caro as HBO Max’s originals chief. His endorsement places the still-untitled Tor project among the service’s developing local productions, with Araújo and Sola shaping the character-driven drama and Calvo and Ambrossi contributing their creative oversight as executive producers.
What Happens Next?
The project remains in development and has not yet received a title. Its central creative team and production partners are in place, with Suma Content working alongside Porta and Luminol Media as the series seeks to turn Tor’s unresolved history and enduring legends into a suspense drama for HBO Max.
