Grace Chow, whose credits include Good Cop/Bad Cop, and High Country: What Lies Beneath actress Nadine Garner are among the newly announced cast. They are joined by Elaine Crombie (Invisible Boys), Sara West (Troppo), Claude Jabbour (Last King of The Cross), Daniel Henshall (Last Seen), Laura Gordon (Watching You), Thom Green (The Survivors) and Chika Ikogwe (Heartbreak High).
The new additions will appear alongside three returning Wentworth stars: Katrina Milosevic as Susan “Boomer” Jenkins, Nicole da Silva as Franky Doyle and Kate Box as Lou Kelly.
The wider cast also includes Rachel Griffiths as Moira, Sophie Lowe as Sam, Alex King as Dee and Chenile Chandler as Lily.
Boomer’s next chapter begins outside prison
The drama follows Boomer after she is paroled and arrives at Sal’s Halfway House. Her goal is to secure custody of her daughter, but that pursuit becomes more complicated when a body is discovered and mistrust begins spreading among the residents.
The first footage emphasizes Boomer’s transition into life after prison. Near the end of the clip, the newly released character speaks to a prison officer outside the facility and leaves behind a message for those still inside.
“Nearly forgot… can you pass this on to the girls for me,” Boomer says, before declaring: “I’m out! Bitches!”
The clip arrived five years to the day after the final episode of Wentworth aired on October 26, 2021, directly linking the new drama’s first look with the earlier show’s conclusion.
Garner said she had watched the original production’s impact in Victoria through friends and colleagues who worked on it.
“For many years I had friends and colleagues creating and working on Wentworth,” she said. “It became a solid fixture of screen work in Victoria. I admired the show from afar and the incredible world that they had built as a team.”
Garner added that she had not expected to become part of the continuation. “I never dreamed I would be stepping into this next chapter and am so grateful for the opportunity to carry forward the story for their dedicated audience. It’s a real thrill for me.”
Production underway in Melbourne
Filming is currently underway in Melbourne ahead of the show’s Australian launch on DAZN’s Binge. Fremantle, which is producing the series through Fremantle Australia, is also shopping it internationally.
The production has received major production investment from Binge parent Foxtel and Screen Australia. It was financed in association with VicScreen.
Carly Heaton and Brett Popplewell serve as executive producers, with Jessica Paine as co-executive producer and Dean O’Toole as producer. Daniel Monaghan is Foxtel’s Executive Director of Content, while Lana Greenhalgh and Joshua Longhurst are executive producers for Foxtel.
Gracie Otto is the set-up director, working alongside directors Nina Buxton and Tenika Smith. Jessica Brookman is the script editor.
The writing team consists of Paine, Kodie Bedford, Alexandra Cullen, Hannah Samuel, Alix Beane, Romina Accurso, Nikki Tran and Chris Squadrito.
ShowBiz Take
Halfway Home is not simply bringing familiar characters back into the same surroundings. Its premise places Boomer in a different stage of her life, where parole, motherhood and the tensions inside a halfway house create a new set of pressures.
That shift matters because the series can retain a direct connection to Wentworth through Boomer, Franky and Lou while building a broader ensemble around them. The discovery of a body also gives the new chapter an immediate mystery, setting Boomer’s custody fight against an atmosphere of growing suspicion.
The timing of the trailer adds another deliberate bridge between the two productions. By releasing the footage on the fifth anniversary of the original finale, the new drama signals its continuity while the expanded cast points toward a story with its own characters and conflicts.
What Happens Next?
Production will continue in Melbourne ahead of the Australian Binge launch. A specific premiere date has not been announced in the supplied material, while Fremantle’s international sales effort could determine where the drama becomes available outside Australia.
