“Resident Evil,” the horror reboot from Constantin Film and Sony Pictures, remained the No. 1 film at the mainland China box office for a third consecutive weekend.

The movie earned RMB37.6 million ($5.6 million) during the Oct. 23-25 frame, according to Artisan Gateway data. Its cumulative gross has now reached $64.8 million following its Oct. 5 rollout during the Golden Week holiday corridor.

The result kept “Resident Evil” ahead of a chart dominated by returning releases, even as overall theatrical business slowed sharply after the holiday period. Mainland China’s total weekend box office stood at $18.6 million.

Holdovers continue to control the chart

New Classics Pictures’ “Traces of Justice” retained second place with $4.7 million in its fourth weekend. The crime procedural drama has collected $92.4 million since its Oct. 1 premiere.

Chen Sicheng directed the period investigation epic and co-wrote it with Zhang Ji and Yan Zijie. The cast includes Zhang Yi, Ma Li and Chen Minghao, with guest appearances by Karry Wang, Fan Chengcheng and Chen Feiyu.

Spanning multiple decades and drawing on real cases, “Traces of Justice” follows an elite public security detective as he works to solve major criminal mysteries.

Domestic body-swap comedy “Mr. & Mrs. Pardon” also maintained its previous chart position, finishing third with $2.6 million for the three-day weekend. The Beijing Joy Fun Pictures release has now grossed $55.5 million.

Directed by Shen Chunyang from a screenplay by Ma Duo, the satire stars real-life comedy duo Shen Chunyang and Xiao Shenyang, alongside Jia Bing and Yu Yang. Its story centers on a middle-aged married couple dealing with domestic tension after they exchange bodies.

In fourth place, Dirty Monkeys’ war comedy-drama “Once Upon a Time in the Middle East” added $800,000 during its 11th weekend in theaters. The film has accumulated $355.5 million since opening on Aug. 11.

Wen Muye directed the release, which stars Shen Teng, Jiang Qiming, Aarif Rahman and Omar Sherif.

Pearl Studio’s computer-animated fantasy comedy “All Wishes Come True!” completed the top five with $600,000 from a two-day weekend frame. Directed by Mu Zhengyang, the family release has reached $306.6 million across 15 weeks since its July 18 opening.

A quieter post-holiday market

Despite “Resident Evil” extending its run at the top, the wider box office entered a pronounced post-holiday downturn. The $18.6 million weekend total marked a subdued period for mainland China’s theatrical market.

The longer-term figures also show the market running behind last year. China’s 2026 box office has reached $4.7 billion to date, down 29.1% from the comparable point in 2025.

ShowBiz Take

“Resident Evil” has secured the clearest headline by holding first place for three weekends and building a $64.8 million total since Oct. 5. But the complete chart tells a broader story: established titles with lengthy theatrical runs continue to occupy much of the top five while overall weekend revenue remains muted.

The weekend’s leading movie is not the chart’s largest cumulative performer. “Once Upon a Time in the Middle East” and “All Wishes Come True!” have each surpassed $300 million after extended runs, while second-place “Traces of Justice” has also outgrossed “Resident Evil” in cumulative terms.

For now, “Resident Evil” owns the No. 1 position, but its third consecutive victory arrives against the backdrop of a softer post-Golden Week marketplace and a year-to-date box office still trailing 2025.
