After seven seasons of betrayals, attacks and White House mayhem, “Tyler Perry’s The Oval” has ended its run on BET without delivering a clean resolution.
The Season 7 closer currently serves as the drama’s de facto series finale because the show has not been renewed. Yet the episode plays more like another season-ending cliffhanger, leaving several major characters in mortal danger while allowing a surprising group of survivors to escape, reunite or begin new relationships.
By the final moments, Kareem has been shot repeatedly, Eli is convulsing on the White House floor, Priscilla and Simone may have been caught in an explosion, and Victoria has taken Jason’s possible execution into her own hands. None of those storylines receives the kind of definitive conclusion viewers might expect from a series finale.
Jason’s revenge campaign ends in custody
Jason (Daniel Croix Henderson) remains consumed by revenge, even turning down Hunter’s (Ed Quinn) offer to help him flee to Cuba. Priscilla (Taja V. Simpson) is among the remaining targets on his list, and Jason plants a bomb in her home.
Before the explosion, Priscilla manages to email a copy of Abrielle’s exposé. The bomb then detonates, but the episode does not reveal whether Priscilla survives. Simone (Kaye Singleton) may also have been caught in the blast, leaving her fate unresolved as well.
Jason does not get the opportunity to pursue any more targets. The Secret Service takes him into custody, placing him within reach of Victoria (Kron Moore), whose own agenda is focused entirely on killing her son.
When the Secret Service refuses to administer a lethal injection, Victoria grabs the syringe herself and begins the process. The episode cuts away without showing Jason’s death, however, adding him to the finale’s growing list of characters whose ultimate outcomes remain uncertain.
Kareem and Eli face grim endings
The strongest indication of a death comes in Kareem’s final scene. After the gang members holding him decide he is no longer useful, they shoot him multiple times in the chest and dump him in the street. Kareem (Matthew Law) is not formally declared dead during the episode, but his survival appears highly unlikely.
Eli (Russell Thomas) also ends the hour in critical condition after accepting a pre-workout shake from Cross. The drink is poisoned, leaving Eli seizing and foaming at the mouth on the White House floor.
He does manage one significant act before drinking it: Eli confirms Hunter’s crimes with Senator Harding. Whether he lives long enough for that confirmation to have further consequences is another question the finale does not answer.
Lilly and Bobby leave under new identities
Not every character is left bleeding, poisoned or trapped in an explosion. Lilly (Ciera Payton) and Bobby (Travis Cure) make their exit with fake identification, adopting new identities and walking away from the turmoil together.
“So you’re riding with me?” Bobby asks before they disappear.
“Until the wheels fall off,” Lilly replies. “And then I’m walking with you.”
Their escape marks an unexpectedly hopeful conclusion for a connection that began with a hookup in an airport bathroom years earlier.
Kyle (Brad Benedict) and Donald (Lodric Collins) also move toward a more settled future. After leaving the hospital, where he was treated for broken ribs, Kyle prepares to move in with Donald.
The arrangement is not without complications. Kyle worries that Donald’s job will force him back into the closet, and Donald acknowledges that he is not ready to make their relationship completely public. Still, Donald takes a concrete step forward by having divorce papers for Lilly formally prepared.
Sharon, Max and Nancy survive one last shooting
Sharon (Teesha Renee) and Max (Bill Barrett) become another new pairing, hooking up after acknowledging that they both “like sex a lot.” Their time together is interrupted when the same gangsters connected to Kareem open fire on the living room.
Unlike several other attacks in the finale, this one has a confirmed outcome: everyone survives. Nancy (Ptosha Storey) injures her leg, but only because Sharon pushes her to the floor to keep her out of the path of the bullets.
That leaves “The Oval” in an unusual place. Lilly and Bobby have escaped, Kyle and Donald are building a life together, and Sharon, Max and Nancy survive the gunfire. Meanwhile, the show stops short of confirming what happened to Jason, Priscilla, Simone and Eli, while Kareem’s apparent death remains the bleakest of the episode’s unresolved outcomes.
Unless the drama receives an unexpected eighth season, those cliffhangers will stand as the final word on seven seasons of White House chaos—a conclusion that provides several characters with fresh starts but leaves the show’s most dangerous confrontations unfinished.
