Spider-Man: Brand New Day is being lined up for a theatrical re-release featuring additional footage, sources indicate. The new material is expected to include Rosario Dawson’s Claire Temple, although her character will not be the only addition. Sony did not respond to a request for comment, and no release date has been confirmed.

Dawson has previously said in interviews that she filmed a scene for Brand New Day that was ultimately cut. Sources suggest the re-release will contain further surprises beyond Temple’s appearance, but no additional details have been disclosed.

Temple is a nurse who provides medical assistance to vigilantes. The character appeared in the first two seasons of Marvel TV’s Daredevil, which ran from 2015 to 2016, as well as Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage and the spinoff The Defenders.

A Record-Breaking Run Could Get Even Bigger

The proposed re-release would extend an already historic theatrical performance for the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed movie starring Tom Holland. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office and currently ranks third worldwide.

The film remains in theaters around the globe and has reached $2.495 billion worldwide, including $950.7 million from North America. It is also Sony’s biggest movie ever, having surpassed 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, which finished with $1.92 billion.

Brand New Day now sits $389.7 million behind Avengers: Endgame in the worldwide rankings. A re-release with unseen footage would give the movie another opportunity to narrow that gap, although its timing and theatrical footprint have yet to be determined.

The current cut of Brand New Day runs for two hours and 25 minutes. It is not yet clear how much footage would be added for the re-release or whether different theater formats could receive different versions of the bonus material.

‘Endgame’ Reissue Provides a Recent Blueprint

The development follows the successful return of the Russo brothers’ Avengers Endgame: Encore. The reissue generated $86 million worldwide over the weekend, including $26 million domestically, and pushed Endgame to a lifetime global total of $2.885 billion.

That keeps Endgame in second place worldwide behind Avatar, which stands at $2.92 billion. The Encore release also served as a promotional push for Disney and Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday, which is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18.

The original version of Endgame had a running time of three hours and one minute. For Encore, audiences purchasing tickets in Disney’s certified premium large-format presentation, InfinityVision, received six minutes and 17 seconds of additional footage from Doomsday. Viewers on non-Imax or non-InfinityVision screens received two minutes and six seconds of bonus footage.

Sony also has a history of returning its major titles to theaters. The studio re-released Spider-Man: No Way Home over Labor Day weekend in 2022, earning $9.3 million during that domestic run. Two decades earlier, over Labor Day weekend in 2002, Sony paired Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man with Men in Black II for a double-feature re-release.

A quieter period at the box office, when premium large-format screens are more readily available, could offer a possible opening for Brand New Day. However, no window has been announced, and it remains uncertain what formats would carry the expanded version.

The film’s box-office milestone adds to a major summer for Holland and Zendaya. The pair also starred in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which has earned $1.75 billion worldwide and is Universal’s highest-grossing movie ever.

What Happens Next?

The key questions now are when Sony will schedule the Spider-Man: Brand New Day re-release, how much new footage it will contain and what other surprises may accompany Dawson’s restored Claire Temple scene. With the movie still playing worldwide, any expanded edition would build on its ongoing run rather than revive a title that has already left theaters.
