Sony’s “Resident Evil” franchise reboot has taken command of the U.K. and Ireland box office, opening at No. 1 with £4.2 million ($5.6 million).

The arrival pushed Warner Bros.’ “Practical Magic 2” into second place during its sophomore weekend. The sequel generated another £2.03 million, lifting its cumulative total to £7.5 million.

Aardman’s animated adventure “Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom” entered the chart at No. 3. Released by Studiocanal, the family title collected £2.2 million in its opening session.

Returning Hits Hold Their Ground

Studiocanal also occupied fourth place with thriller “Pressure,” which earned £1.4 million in its second week. Its running total now stands at £5.8 million.

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” completed the top five in its 10th frame. The Universal epic added £794,765, bringing its U.K. and Ireland haul to £116.1 million.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” continued its major theatrical run in sixth place. The Sony Pictures superhero blockbuster collected £772,975 during its eighth week, taking its local total to £133.9 million. That result places the Marvel release third on the all-time U.K. and Ireland box office chart, immediately behind “Skyfall.”

Disney documentary “Oasis: Don’t Look Back in Anger” landed at No. 7 with £659,899 in its second frame. It has now earned £5.1 million.

Three more releases completed the top 10. Paramount’s “Bad Apples” debuted in eighth place with £658,468, while Trafalgar Releasing’s “Transformers: 40th Anniversary Event” opened at No. 9 with £585,683.

Sony’s “Insidious: Out of the Further” rounded out the chart, taking £263,374 in its fifth week. Its cumulative result reached £10.5 million.

Specialized Releases Add to the Weekend

Outside the top 10, Mubi’s “Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma” increased its cumulative total to £1.3 million.

Mubi also launched Garth Jennings’ documentary “Pulp: What Do You Do for an Encore?” through a special one-night-only live broadcast Q&A. Frontman Jarvis Cocker and Jennings participated in the event, which was hosted from Picturehouse Central.

The Friday presentation generated £98,392 from 51 locations. Encore screenings over the rest of the weekend brought the documentary’s overall haul to £150,455.

What Happens Next?

The next theatrical frame begins with National Theatre Live’s mid-week presentation of “The Misanthrope.” Paramount will then launch David Ayer’s action thriller “Heart of the Beast,” starring Brad Pitt and J.K. Simmons, in more than 300 locations.

Friday brings a sizable collection of new releases and restorations. Universal’s “Sense and Sensibility” is among the titles receiving a wide rollout across more than 300 locations.

Neon will open Na Hong-Jin’s thriller “Hope” at more than 100 locations. Its cast includes Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Hoyeon, Taylor Russell, Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender.

Several specialized and limited titles will begin runs across at least 25 screens. They include Mubi’s “Her Private Hell,” directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and starring Sophie Thatcher and Charles Melton; BUFF Studios’ “Shadows of Beirut”; and Dartmouth Films’ nature documentary “North Sea, Nature Untamed,” directed by Mark Verkerk.

Other specialized and platform offerings include Sony’s “Rehearsals for a Revolution,” MetFilm Distribution’s release of Ross McElwee’s “Remake,” Blue Finch Film Releasing’s “Boorman and the Devil” and Metis Films’ “Babystar.”

The Friday lineup will also feature family and international releases. Vue Lumière is presenting the double bill “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt + The Tiger Who Came to Tea,” while Dreamz Entertainment is opening Indian title “Meesaya Murukku 2.” Bakrania Media will release “The Vvaan” and “Mitrata.”

Rounding out the incoming slate, Disney will open “Avengers: Endgame Encore,” and Studiocanal will launch a 40th anniversary release of Michael Mann’s “Manhunter.”
