Michelle Branch has given her 2002 hit “Goodbye to You” a new chapter, teaming with Maren Morris for a full duet and bringing Kristin Cavallari aboard for a Laguna Beach-inspired music video.

The reworked track is out now via BMG. Rather than simply recording the song again, Branch and Morris trade lines centered on change, independence and letting go.

“Beyond thrilled to be joining Maren on her beautiful rendition of ‘Goodbye to You,’” Branch said. “Call me crazy, but I prefer her version to the original.”

Morris, who has described Branch as a formative influence, was encouraged to put her own stamp on the song.

“Michelle was really encouraging to let me make it my own… Her songwriting has always been ahead of its time,” Morris said.

The two Grammy winners offered an early glimpse of the collaboration last month, when Branch made a surprise appearance at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium during Morris’ 10th-anniversary celebration of her debut album, Hero.

A return to Laguna Beach

The music video amplifies the song’s early-2000s connections by recreating the prom scene from MTV’s Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County. “Goodbye to You” was featured during the reality series’ first season, when cast members sang along to it in a limo.

Cavallari, who rose to fame on the show, appears in the new video with Branch and Morris. For the reality star, returning to the song carried a personal sense of nostalgia.

“‘Goodbye to You’ is one of those songs that immediately takes me back to a very specific time in my life,” Cavallari said, describing the shoot as “a fun, full-circle experience.”

The video’s prom recreation brings the track back into the world of the series that helped give it a memorable television moment, while the duet reshapes the song through the voices of Branch and Morris.

Branch’s anniversary EP takes shape

The new “Goodbye to You” is the second confirmed release from Everywhere and Back Again, Branch’s forthcoming EP commemorating 25 years in music. The project is due Nov. 6 through BMG.

For the EP, Branch is revisiting music from across her catalog through fresh recordings made with guest collaborators. She launched the project earlier this year with a reworked version of “The Game of Love,” reuniting with New Radicals frontman Gregg Alexander.

The anniversary project arrives alongside Branch’s Everywhere and Back Again Tour. The nearly 20-date fall run sold out nationwide within one week, leading to the addition of a 17-date leg scheduled for 2027.

The history behind “Goodbye to You”

“Goodbye to You” first appeared on Branch’s 2001 debut album, The Spirit Room. The album sold three million copies worldwide and earned double-platinum certification in the United States, helping establish Branch among a generation of young women writing and performing their own material.

The song became Branch’s third top-40 hit and reached No. 21 on the Hot 100 in 2002. Her 2002 collaboration with Carlos Santana, “The Game of Love,” climbed to No. 5 on the chart and earned Branch a Grammy.

Branch later topped the Hot Country Songs chart in 2006 with “Leave the Pieces,” recorded as one half of the Wreckers.

Morris has also moved between country and pop, including “The Middle,” her collaboration with Zedd and Grey. That track reached No. 5 on the Hot 100. She is also a Grammy winner.

What Happens Next?

With “Goodbye to You” joining the updated “The Game of Love,” two songs from Everywhere and Back Again have now been confirmed. Branch’s larger catalog-spanning EP will follow on Nov. 6 via BMG, while her expanded tour plans now extend into 2027.
