JustWatch is moving beyond helping viewers find something to stream and will soon let them watch inside its own ecosystem.
JustWatch Group, the company behind the streaming guide, is launching JustWatch TV next month within the main JustWatch app and on its website. The new service will offer multiple viewing options, including free ad-supported viewing, paid ad-free access and rentals.
The rollout is set for a broad international footprint. JustWatch TV will be available across the U.S. and Canada, the U.K. and Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, Australia and New Zealand.
The move marks a notable expansion for a company known primarily as a navigation tool for an increasingly crowded streaming market. The JustWatch app has more than 50 million monthly users and includes programming information for more than 1,500 streaming services worldwide.
David Croyé, founder and CEO of JustWatch Group, framed the launch as an extension of the company’s original mission while speaking at TIFF: The Market, the Toronto International Film Festival’s new content marketplace.
“Every day, millions of people come to JustWatch searching for simpler ways to watch and discover hundreds of thousands of movies and TV shows,” Croyé said. “For over a decade, our mission has been to connect fans with their favorite films and shows, particularly the hard-to-find and previously unavailable titles. With the launch of JustWatch TV, we aim to make content discovery, access and engagement even easier.”
Content Partners and Viewing Options
JustWatch TV’s launch partners include Paramount, New Regency, Fremantle, Bleecker Street and Vortex Media.
The service is being positioned around both access and discovery. Viewers will be able to watch titles for free with advertising, pay for an ad-free experience or rent programming through JustWatch TV. The company also says the platform will help users rediscover titles on services they already use.
Quentin Carbonell, JustWatch’s senior vice president of global content acquisitions and strategy, said the service is intended to address the challenges of a fragmented streaming landscape.
“JustWatch TV is designed to meet that demand head-on, offering a straightforward solution at a time of fragmentation,” Carbonell said. “We are curating film and TV hits and hard-to-find gems that you can watch for free or rent on JustWatch, or easily rediscover them on your favorite services. This way, JustWatch TV aims to support the whole industry, from filmmakers to distributors to streaming platforms across the world.”
That positioning keeps JustWatch tied to the role that built its audience: helping viewers figure out where titles are available. JustWatch — The Streaming Guide directs users in 140 markets to more than 500,000 movies and TV shows. Its data is also shared with more than 1,400 partner websites and apps.
A Broader JustWatch Business
JustWatch Group’s business extends beyond its consumer guide. The company also has a media division that creates ad campaigns across social media platforms including YouTube, Meta and TikTok.
The company employs more than 200 people worldwide. It is headquartered in Berlin and has offices in Los Angeles, London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Munich, Dubai and Sydney.
With JustWatch TV, the company is adding a direct viewing layer to a platform already built around streaming discovery. The next step comes next month, when the service launches inside the JustWatch app and on the JustWatch website in its initial slate of markets.
