Jennifer Lawrence has signed on to lead The Flood, a new science-fiction thriller from filmmaker Zach Cregger.
Warner Bros.’ New Line division is backing the project after picking it up out of turnaround from Netflix earlier this year. Cregger wrote the screenplay from his own original idea and will direct and produce the movie.
The film extends Cregger’s relationship with New Line, the studio behind his breakout, Oscar-winning horror movie Weapons. With his Resident Evil movie now released and a hit, The Flood is set to become his next project to move into production.
A Major Star Joins Cregger’s Next Film
Lawrence’s involvement gives the developing thriller a high-profile lead. The actress is known for being selective about her projects, making her commitment a significant piece of the film’s package as it moves toward cameras.
Her casting follows a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in the post-partum drama Die My Love. Lawrence will next appear opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in What Happens at Night, a drama directed by Martin Scorsese.
For Cregger, The Flood continues a run of large-scale genre projects following Weapons and Resident Evil. While the new movie is identified as a sci-fi thriller, it originates with Cregger, who is handling the project across multiple roles as writer, director and producer.
The Producing Team
Amblin Entertainment is producing The Flood alongside Cregger’s frequent collaborators Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment.
The involvement of New Line also brings Cregger back to the studio responsible for Weapons. The new movie’s path to the division came after its earlier development at Netflix, with New Line taking over the project when it became available in turnaround.
What Happens Next?
Production on The Flood is due to begin in Europe during the first months of 2027. The movie is planned as a theatrical release rather than a streaming debut.
New Line has set The Flood to arrive in theaters on August 11, 2028.
