James Gunn and Peter Safran are set to remain at the helm of DC Studios following the Paramount-Warner Bros. merger, preserving the leadership team overseeing the Warner Bros.-owned film, television and comic book production label.

Sources say Gunn and Safran recently met with new Skydance co-CEO David Ellison to discuss their future, and the meeting went well. Paramount and DC could not be reached for comment.

The decision provides continuity for DC Studios as the wider film operation enters a new reporting structure. The Paramount and Warner Bros. film units are both set to report to Paramount Pictures co-chairs Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein.

Gunn and Safran will continue leading DC’s operations within that broader corporate framework. Their ongoing tenure comes as the studio has several projects in production or preparing for release across film and television.

DC’s Upcoming Film Slate

Gunn is currently shooting Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to Superman. The film is scheduled for release on July 9, 2027.

Superman generated more than $618 million at the worldwide box office and ranked as Warner Bros.’ second-highest-grossing movie last year.

DC Studios is also preparing Clayface, centered on the Batman antagonist. The project is the label’s first lower-budget genre movie and is scheduled to open on Oct. 23.

On television, the DC series Lanterns has been a ratings success on HBO Max, adding another active title to the operation overseen by Gunn and Safran.

What Happens Next?

Gunn and Safran will continue directing DC Studios’ film, TV and comic book efforts while the combined companies establish their new reporting lines. Goldberg and Greenstein will oversee the Paramount and Warner Bros. film units, with DC’s current leaders remaining in place as work continues on Man of Tomorrow and the rest of the label’s slate.
