James Gunn is already writing the movie he plans to make after Man of Tomorrow, even as he waits to see an assembly of the upcoming Superman sequel.

The DC Studios co-CEO confirmed his progress after a fan asked whether he was ready to begin writing the follow-up project. Gunn’s answer was direct: he is “already in it.”

“I had to do something while I was waiting for the assembly!!” Gunn wrote on Threads.

His update comes after Man of Tomorrow completed production in August. The film, a sequel to 2025’s Superman, is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 9, 2027.

Man of Tomorrow will be the fourth movie in Gunn’s new DCU franchise. While Gunn has now confirmed that work is underway on the screenplay for his next film, his comment focused only on the fact that he has started writing.

Gunn and Peter Safran remain at DC Studios

Gunn’s writing update arrives during a major corporate transition involving DC Studios’ parent company. Paramount has acquired Warner Bros., with the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery merger resulting in a company renamed Skydance.

Gunn and fellow DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran are set to remain in their positions. David Ellison invited both executives to continue their work at the company.

Under the new corporate structure, the Paramount and Warner Bros. film units will report to Paramount Pictures co-chairs Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein.

Despite those changes, Gunn’s latest comments indicate that he remains focused on developing future films while Man of Tomorrow moves into its editing stage.

DC’s film slate continues to take shape

Gunn and Safran assumed their leadership roles after the Warner Bros. Discovery merger in 2022. During their tenure, DC Studios has released Superman and Supergirl.

More projects are on the way. Clayface is set to premiere Oct. 23, while The Batman: Part II is currently in production and scheduled to open on Feb. 18, 2028.

For Gunn, the immediate milestone is the assembly of Man of Tomorrow. But rather than waiting for that process to finish before turning to another screenplay, he has already moved into writing the film that will follow it.

What Happens Next?

Man of Tomorrow is now headed toward its July 9, 2027 theatrical premiere following the completion of filming in August. At the same time, Gunn will continue his leadership role alongside Safran under the company’s new structure—and keep writing the next movie on his agenda.
