An animated television adaptation of Blizzard Entertainment’s “Diablo” franchise is officially in development at Netflix, with Blizzard using the BlizzCon 2026 stage to confirm that the long-running action-RPG series is headed for a new screen format.
Blizzard president Johanna Faries announced the project during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 at the Anaheim Convention Center on Saturday. The reveal puts one of Blizzard’s signature game worlds into active development as an animated series, though additional details about the show have not yet been shared.
“Diablo” takes place in the dark world of Sanctuary, where humanity is trapped in the eternal conflict between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells. That setting will serve as the foundation for the Netflix project, which Blizzard described as part of a broader push to tell stories outside its games.
In Blizzard’s official description of the project, the company said: “After decades of bringing entire universes to life through our games, we’re partnering with some creative powerhouses to tell even more stories beyond gaming across new screens. A new animated series set in the world of ‘Diablo’ is in development with Netflix. More details will be shared in the future, but this is only the beginning, with even more taking shape across our universes.”
A milestone year for “Diablo”
The timing gives the announcement added franchise weight. The first “Diablo” game launched in 1996, making this year the 30th anniversary of the action-RPG franchise. Its most recent installment, “Diablo IV,” launched in 2023.
The Netflix series is currently described only as an animated TV adaptation in development, and Blizzard’s statement does not provide a release date, episode count, voice cast, creative team or story specifics beyond its setting in the world of “Diablo.” The company indicated that more information will be released later.
BlizzCon returns with a major screen announcement
The “Diablo” news arrived as part of BlizzCon 2026, a two-day fan-festival event running Sept. 12-13. The convention is built as a celebration of Blizzard Entertainment and its franchises, including “Diablo,” “World of Warcraft” and “Overwatch.”
This year’s gathering also carries industry significance for Blizzard: it is the first BlizzCon since Microsoft closed its $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023.
Ahead of the event, Faries spoke about what BlizzCon represents for the company. “BlizzCon in and of itself represents so much for all of us to be able to shine a light on all the great work going on at Blizzard,” she said in an interview with Variety. “We have put a lot of thought into this moment, and why now, and how do we continue to capture and build on the momentum we’re experiencing as an organization.”
For now, the confirmed headline is straightforward but substantial: “Diablo” is moving toward television as an animated Netflix series, with Blizzard framing the project as an extension of its game worlds into new forms of storytelling.
