Carly Rae Jepsen has returned with one of the biggest releases of her recording career: Day and Night, a double album that arrived at midnight and stretches across 24 songs and more than 100 minutes.
The project is Jepsen’s eighth studio album and follows 2023’s The Loveliest Time. For an artist whose breakout moment came with the 2012 smash “Call Me Maybe” — which spent nine weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and marked the first of her six appearances on that chart — Day and Night represents a notably expansive new chapter.
Jepsen explained in an interview with Billboard News that the double-album format had long been on her mind.
“I always knew I wanted to do one day was a double album, and if not now, then when, really,” she said. “I was kind of divided in these two different flavors of what I wanted to do musically, and the solution was sort of just why not do both at the same time? So Day and Night was born.”
A Wide-Screen Pop Release
The album’s scale is central to the rollout. Rather than trimming the material into a single-disc statement, Jepsen has presented Day and Night as two connected musical sides, reflecting the “two different flavors” she described in the interview.
The first single, “On Wires,” has been positioned as a darker entry point into the project. Jepsen described the track as a chance to try something she had not previously explored in quite the same way.
“I hadn’t really done anything quite like ‘On Wires’ before,” she said, adding that “as a musician who’s been in this for a while now, that’s so exciting to land on, like, a new genre to play with that maybe you haven’t dabbled in before and to figure out how to make it your own.”
“On Wires” was co-written with Nate Cyphert and Kyle Shearer. Jepsen said of the collaboration, “we all felt like we had something special.”
A Busy Season Beyond the Album
The arrival of Day and Night comes during an especially active period for Jepsen. Last month, producers of an upcoming Broadway musical adaptation of 10 Things I Hate About You announced that she will team with Grammy-winner Ethan Gruska, associated with boygenius, to write the project’s music and lyrics.
Jepsen also became a mother in March, when she and her husband, Cole Marsden Greif-Neill, also known as Cole M.G.N., welcomed a baby boy named Ilya.
On the charts, Jepsen has five entries on the all-genres albums chart. That tally includes EMOTION, her 2016 top 10 release, which recently marked its 10th anniversary with a special expanded edition. That edition included the new songs “More,” “Guardian Angel,” “Back Of My Heart” and “Lost In Devotion.”
With Day and Night, Jepsen adds a 24-track double album to a catalog already defined by major pop moments, chart history and a willingness to keep pushing into new musical territory. The album is available to stream now.
