Bloodious Games is bringing the world of its psychological horror game “Madison” to film through a new partnership with Story Kitchen.
The L.A.-based production company, which specializes in adapting games for the screen, will develop a feature set within the universe of Bloodious’ first-person horror title. Story Kitchen is aiming for a theatrical release, although the project does not yet have a distribution partner.
The movie remains in an early stage of development. No cast, director or screenwriter has been announced, and there is currently no expected release date.
Inside the world of “Madison”
First launched in 2022, “Madison” follows Luca Maxwell, who receives an instant camera as a gift for his 16th birthday. The present comes with a terrifying complication: A demon inhabits the camera and forces Luca to continue a murderous ritual begun decades earlier by Madison, a satanist serial killer.
Players use the camera while solving puzzles and attempting to break the cycle of madness. While the planned feature will be set in the game’s world, no specific story details for the movie have been revealed.
Story Kitchen co-founders Dmitri Johnson and Mike Goldberg indicated that preserving the game’s unnerving impact will be central to the adaptation.
“‘Madison’ earned its reputation one heartbeat at a time. Players don’t just remember the story; they remember what it did to them,” Johnson and Goldberg said. “Our job is to carry that physical experience into a theater without losing what makes it Bloodious’s world.”
Bloodious founder Alexis Di Stefano, who created and directed the game, said Story Kitchen recognized that its defining elements extend beyond the basic premise.
“We built ‘Madison’ to be felt, not just played,” Di Stefano said. “Story Kitchen understood from the first conversation that the camera, the house, the Maxwell family, and the terrifying entities behind it all aren’t just set dressing; they’re the franchise. That’s who we wanted to build the next chapter with.”
A growing horror universe
The film deal arrives as Bloodious continues expanding “Madison” in games. “The Maxwells’ Curse,” a new story expansion, is scheduled for 2027 and will be free to all owners of “Madison.”
A free Halloween update also introduces two difficulty options. An expanded Normal Mode is intended to make the experience more accessible for people new to horror and puzzle games. Possession Mode, by contrast, is described as an “intense new challenge that pushes even the most experienced players to their limits.”
Bloodious has also released an immersive virtual-reality edition of the game. Since its 2022 debut, “Madison” has received multiple awards and recognitions, including the best narrative grand-winner honor at the NYX Game Awards and best game at EVA 2022.
For Story Kitchen, the project joins a wider slate of game adaptations. The company, co-founded by “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie franchise producer Dmitri Johnson, is also spearheading Netflix’s animated series “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft,” Prime Video’s “Life Is Strange” and Lionsgate’s “Streets of Rage.”
Story Kitchen additionally has a television first-look deal with Amazon MGM Studios and an animated-film first-look deal with DreamWorks Animation. The company is represented by WME and Pryor Cashman.
ShowBiz Take
The importance of the deal lies in how clearly Bloodious and Story Kitchen are framing “Madison” as more than a single game storyline. Di Stefano identified the camera, the house, the Maxwell family and the entities surrounding them as the core of the franchise, while the announced feature is described as taking place in that broader world.
That approach gives the filmmakers room to develop a movie without yet committing publicly to a direct recreation of Luca Maxwell’s experience. At the same time, the companies’ comments make clear that the game’s physical sense of dread—and not merely its recognizable objects and characters—is a priority for the adaptation.
What Happens Next?
The immediate questions are who will write and direct the film, who will join its cast and which company will distribute it. Story Kitchen’s theatrical target is confirmed, but no release timetable has been set.
In the meantime, the “Madison” universe will continue growing through the game’s Halloween update and the free “The Maxwells’ Curse” expansion planned for 2027.
