Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom Of The Opera is heading to the big screen in a new live recording tied to the musical’s 40th anniversary at His Majesty’s Theatre.
Universal Pictures Content Group, LW Entertainment and Cameron Mackintosh have joined forces to produce the filmed presentation, which is scheduled for a cinema release in 2027. The recording will capture the production’s anniversary gala performance on 9 October 2026.
Brett Sullivan, whose credits include Hadestown, will direct the performance for the screen. Dione Orrom, credited on Six: The Musical Live!, is producing, while Universal Pictures Content Group EVP Helen Parker serves as executive producer.
The project brings the show’s international anniversary company to cinemas following its 40th-birthday season. Although the film’s release is set for 2027, no more specific theatrical date has been announced.
The anniversary cast
Jordan Donica leads the company as The Phantom, with Beatrice Penny-Touré playing Christine Daaé and Rhys Whitfield appearing as Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny.
The principal cast also includes Sierra Boggess as Carlotta, Matt Bateman as Piangi, Joseph Millson as Monsieur André and Ian Pirie as Monsieur Firmin. Joanna Riding plays Madame Giry, while Millie Lyon portrays her daughter, Meg.
The wider company features Colleen Rose Curran, Harry Apps, George Arvidson, Michael Baxter, Embla Bishop, David Burilin, Polly Clarke, Leonard Cook, Hywel Dowsell, Connor Ewing, Lila Falce-Bass, Florence Fowler, James Gant, Emily George, Melanie Gowie, Molly Hall, Will Hawksworth, Matt Hayden, Nino Hepher, Mandy Kwan, Verity Marlow, Tim Morgan, Inguna Morozova, Skye November, Taylor Pardell, Johnny Randall, Rachel Spurrell, Jasmine Wallis, Victoria Ward and Alicia Wong.
The filmed gala is one part of the anniversary celebration surrounding Webber’s musical. A newly remixed edition of the original London cast recording is also on the way, drawing from the production’s 1986 analogue master tapes.
A restored and remixed cast recording
Webber uncovered the original analogue masters and has remixed the score for the first time, including the restoration of sections that were not previously released.
Titled The Phantom of the Opera (The Andrew Lloyd Webber 2026 Mix), the new version will arrive digitally on 9 October. Physical editions will follow, with both vinyl and CD releases scheduled for 6 November.
The music release and the live cinema recording will offer two separate versions of the anniversary: one revisiting the 1986 original London cast recording through newly mixed masters, and the other preserving the 2026 gala company in performance at His Majesty’s Theatre.
What Happens Next?
The special gala performance will take place on 9 October 2026 and serve as the performance captured for the screen. The remixed cast recording will be released digitally that same date before its vinyl and CD editions arrive on 6 November. The filmed Phantom Of The Opera will then reach cinemas in 2027.
