André Holland has joined Universal’s Miami Vice ’85, expanding a cast led by Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler. Details about Holland’s character are being kept under wraps.
The actor, whose credits include Moonlight and The Knick, joins previously announced cast members Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, John Leguizamo, Danny Ramirez and Walton Goggins.
Joseph Kosinski is directing the new film from a screenplay by Dan Gilroy. The story will explore both the glamour and corruption of Miami during the mid-1980s, offering a new version of the NBC series that ran from 1984 to 1990.
Drawing inspiration from the original premiere
Miami Vice ’85 takes its inspiration from “Brother’s Keeper,” the two-hour pilot episode that aired on September 16, 1984. Written by series creator Anthony Yerkovich, the premiere introduced Vice cop Sonny Crockett, played by Don Johnson, and New York detective Ricardo Tubbs, played by Phillip Michael Thomas.
Crockett and Tubbs initially struggle to connect, but their investigation eventually brings them together as partners. The episode follows their pursuit of Colombian drug lord Calderone, portrayed by Miguel Piñero, who became the show’s principal antagonist during its first season.
Tubbs arrives in Miami with a deeply personal reason for going after Calderone. He is seeking revenge for his brother, who was killed after the cartel leader ordered a hit on him. Despite their rocky introduction, Tubbs and Crockett ultimately decide to work together.
The pilot is also associated with a driving sequence featuring the pair in Crockett’s black Ferrari Daytona Spyder as Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” plays.
Leguizamo’s involvement in the movie adds another link to the original series. The actor previously appeared twice as Orlando, Calderone’s son. It remains unknown whether he will return to that role in Miami Vice ’85.
The creative team and release plan
The movie will be filmed for IMAX and is scheduled for release on May 19, 2028. Production is expected to begin this year.
Dylan Clark and his Dylan Clark Productions banner are producing alongside Kosinski. Clark’s listed credits include The Batman and The Penguin, while Kosinski’s include F1.
Gilroy is writing the current screenplay using the characters Yerkovich created for the original show. Yerkovich and Michael Mann executive-produced the series. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier version of the movie’s script.
Holland’s growing slate
Holland recently completed work on Amazon’s forthcoming series Delphi. He also led Duke Johnson’s The Actor, which received a theatrical release in March.
In 2025, Holland produced and starred in Love, Brooklyn through his Harper Road Films banner, working with producer Steven Soderbergh. His other recent work includes Hulu’s Exhibiting Forgiveness alongside Andra Day.
He is also known for his performance in Barry Jenkins’ Oscar-winning Moonlight, in which he appeared with Mahershala Ali. Holland is represented by WME and Anonymous Content.
What Happens Next?
With production due to begin this year, Holland’s role remains one of the project’s major unanswered questions. Leguizamo’s character has likewise not been confirmed, leaving open whether his casting will connect directly to his earlier appearances as Orlando or introduce him in a different capacity.
