Marcus Theatres has delivered the strongest third quarter in its history, powered by a film lineup led by Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey and several major family titles.
The chain reported theatrical revenue of $145 million for the three months ended in September, a 21% increase. Operating income reached $22.2 million, rising by $9.9 million and helping Marcus set new third-quarter records for both revenue and profit.
The results reflected gains across attendance, ticket pricing and concessions. Admission revenue increased 22% as attendance climbed 17%, while the average ticket price rose 4.3%. Average concession revenue per customer was also up 4%.
Marcus Theatres President Jeffry Tomachek credited the company’s historic summer season for the quarter’s performance.
“The box office continued to soar in the third quarter, with the best summer movie season in company history driving our record-breaking quarterly results,” Tomachek said.
A broad slate powered the quarter
Spider-Man: Brand New Day was Marcus Theatres’ highest-performing film of the quarter, followed by The Odyssey, Toy Story 5, Minions & Monsters and Moana.
That top five gave the chain a varied mix of titles during the record period. The size of the audience increase was particularly significant: the 22% rise in admission revenue was not driven by ticket prices alone, with attendance advancing by a substantially larger percentage than the 4.3% increase in average ticket price.
The company said its momentum has continued into the fourth quarter. Verity, Other Mommy and Street Fighter were among the films already performing well during the period.
Tomachek also cited The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday as incoming franchise favorites supporting the company’s outlook.
Other anticipated highlights for the remainder of 2026 include The Cat in the Hat, Godzilla Minus Zero, I Play Rocky, Hexed, Focker-In-Law, The Angry Birds Movie 3 and Jumanji: Open World.
Marcus looks toward a packed 2027
The theater operator also identified an extensive group of 2027 films with potential to sustain box-office activity. The list includes Ice Age: Boiling Point, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, Gatto, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Chosen: The Crucifixion, Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, Not Alone, Spaceballs: The New One and The Legend of Zelda.
Marcus also pointed to Star Wars: Starfighter, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, Shrek 5, Man of Tomorrow, A Minecraft Movie: Squared, A Quiet Place Part 3, The Bluey Movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem 2 and The New Simpsons Movie.
Rounding out the company’s 2027 watchlist are The Conjuring: First Communion, The Great Beyond, Margie Claus, Frozen 3, Avengers: Secret Wars, The Housemaid’s Secret and The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
ShowBiz Take
Marcus Theatres’ quarter matters because its record performance was supported by multiple parts of the exhibition business at once. More customers came through the doors, average ticket prices increased and concession spending per person moved higher. The company also benefited from a diverse group of top-performing films rather than identifying only one title as the driver of the quarter.
The 17% attendance gain provides an especially clear measure of the box-office surge behind the results. With fourth-quarter films already performing and Marcus outlining additional releases through 2027, the chain is presenting its record summer as part of continuing momentum rather than an isolated quarter.
What Happens Next?
Marcus was the first exhibitor to report during the current earnings season. The theater chain represents half of Milwaukee-based Marcus Corp., which also operates a hotel group. CEO Greg Marcus was scheduled to host an investor call later Thursday morning, offering the company’s next opportunity to discuss the record quarter and its outlook for the upcoming film slate.
