Taylor Swift joined SNL host Dakota Johnson during the actress’s opening monologue, stepping into a comedy bit centered on Johnson’s history of dating musicians.
The appearance brought Swift and Johnson together again after the Verity actress appeared in Swift’s “Patient Zero” music video. The timing also came just before Johnson’s birthday: She turns 37 on Sunday, although it was not confirmed that Swift’s participation was intended as a birthday present.
Johnson used the monologue to update viewers on what had happened since her previous turn hosting the NBC show. This marked her third appearance on SNL, following her debut during season 40.
Her opening remarks quickly shifted toward her romantic life and her recent relationships with Role Model and Chris Martin.
“I went through two very public, very lame breakups with two very awesome musicians,” Johnson said.
She then turned the subject into a joke about how attending live music has worked out for her.
“It’s not my fault, though,” Johnson continued. “Some people leave concerts with merch and I leave concerts with a two and a half year relationship. But I have really good friends. They don’t judge me for dating these men. They’re actually really supportive.”
Swift Delivers the Punchline
That setup provided Swift with her cue to walk onto the stage and offer a different version of their supportive friendship.
“I’m not your therapist actually,” Swift told Johnson. “You just show up once a week at my house with an empty bottle of wine and ask if I want some.”
The exchange made Swift part of Johnson’s third SNL appearance while also creating a playful connection to Johnson’s role in the “Patient Zero” video. Whether viewed as payback for that appearance or simply well-timed birthday fun, Swift’s entrance supplied the monologue’s celebrity punchline.
