Disney+ will not go ahead with a second season of Marvel’s Wonder Man.
The streamer has canceled the series — despite picking up a second season in March. The un-renewal means that Wonder Man, starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Ben Kingsley, will follow the path of most other live-action Marvel series on Disney+ in being one and done, either by design or via cancellation.
Wonder Man had a solid opening for Disney+, drawing 618 million minutes of viewing time for its premiere week in late January, according to Nielsen’s streaming ratings. It fell out of the top 10 original streaming shows after that, however. The show also drew strong scores from both critics and viewers on review aggregator sites, and Abdul-Mateen was nominated for an Emmy for playing the title role.
With Wonder Man’s cancellation, Loki and Daredevil: Born Again remain the only two live-action Marvel series on Disney+ that have run for more than a single season — though WandaVision, Agatha All Along and the upcoming VisionQuest are connected to one another. (Several animated shows, including What If …? and X-Men 97, also have multiple seasons.)
Co-creators Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest were also set to return for a second season. They executive produced Wonder Man with Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Jonathan Schwartz and Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television and Marvel Animation. Guest was the showrunner, and Cretton directed several episodes.
The show’s cast also featured X Mayo, Demetrius Grosse, Zlatko Burić, Arian Moayed, Olivia Thirlby, Dan Donohue and Kameron J. Meadows.
