Terry Matalas says Marvel’s VisionQuest did not use generative AI in its production, even as the Disney+ series centers on an artificial intelligence character.
The series creator confirmed the decision in a recent interview with ScreenRant, saying the creative team had no reason to bring GenAI into the making of the show. VisionQuest is scheduled to debut Oct. 14 on Disney+.
“No, not at all. There hasn’t really been a need,” Matalas said. “All the designs nod to how our current form of AI processes things… That felt like a fun way for us to comment on it.”
The clarification is notable because VisionQuest is built around Vision, the android played by Paul Bettany, in what is described as the character’s first solo outing. The show’s story takes place after the events of WandaVision, the 2021 Marvel series.
A series about AI, made without GenAI
According to the source material, VisionQuest follows the resurrected android Vision as he sets out on a journey of self-discovery. The story also involves AI personas embedded in his programming, while a bounty is placed on his head.
Even with that premise, the show’s visual approach was not generated by AI tools. Production designer Will Hughes-Jones explained that his team relied on human creativity to approximate the imperfect visual quality associated with AI software renderings.
Matalas’ comments frame the show’s design language as a creative response to contemporary AI imagery rather than the product of generative systems. His remarks also make clear that the production’s AI-related ideas were handled through traditional creative work by the show’s team.
Disney’s broader AI backdrop
The confirmation arrives in the same year that Disney ended a major AI-related arrangement. In May, Disney pulled the plug on its $1 billion investment in OpenAI’s Sora, ending the use of Disney’s extensive character catalogue in the text-to-video app.
