Verity delivered a strong global box-office opening, taking $62.5 million worldwide and giving Colleen Hoover her second-best launch on comparable figures. The adaptation of Hoover’s novel stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett.
Only 2024’s It Ends With Us, which began with $95.6 million worldwide, has opened higher among Hoover titles. Verity also surpassed the reported $46 million worldwide start of Warner Bros.’ Practical Magic 2, which launched in 77 overseas territories.
The Michael Showalter-directed movie carried a net production cost of $40 million. Its performance adds to Amazon MGM Studios’ presence in female-focused entertainment, alongside Prime series including Off Campus and Elle.
Verity lands No. 1 openings around the world
In the United States, Verity opened with $32.6 million, with women making up 78% of its audience. Feedback from Amazon’s international offices indicated that the movie was also reaching viewers beyond women and literary fans.
The film outpaced the reported global launches of Hoover adaptations Regretting You, which opened with $23.6 million in 43 markets, and Reminders of Him, which started with $28.1 million worldwide across 57 markets. It also finished ahead of both titles in several overseas markets.
Verity topped the charts in the United Kingdom with $4.5 million from 950 screens, Brazil with $3.8 million from 715 screens and Australia with $3.1 million from 500 screens. In those three markets, its opening also exceeded that of Housemaid, although that film had a staggered rollout and a year-end holiday boost.
Mexico contributed $1.5 million from 1,522 screens for a No. 2 finish. Other No. 1 results included Germany with $3.8 million from 715 screens, Portugal with $575,000 from 60 screens and Hungary with $318,000 from 70 screens. Portugal and Hungary represented the strongest openings for a Hoover adaptation in those markets.
The film also ranked first in the Netherlands with $590,000, Norway with $400,000, Austria with $380,000, Sweden with $375,000, Ukraine with $370,000, Switzerland with $330,000 and Belgium with $320,000. Its Ukraine result, from 235 screens, marked the country’s biggest opening for a Hoover book adaptation.
Further No. 1 debuts came in Argentina, Greece, Lithuania, Finland and Israel. Verity was the top MPA title in the United Arab Emirates with $670,000 from 91 screens and in India with $500,000 from 350 screens. The India result was 12% behind It Ends With Us.
Elsewhere, France opened to $1.7 million from 384 screens for second place. Spain delivered $825,000 and a No. 4 ranking, while Italy took $760,000 for third. The movie also posted $535,000 in Saudi Arabia, $370,000 in New Zealand, $240,000 in Poland, $238,000 in Colombia and $233,000 in the Philippines.
Digger struggles against its sizable budget
While Verity connected internationally, Alejandro Inarritu’s political satire Digger opened to $20 million worldwide. The Tom Cruise movie, which had a net cost of $160 million, earned $12 million overseas and $8 million in the United States.
That debut was well below the $48.5 million worldwide opening of One Battle After Another across 74 territories a year earlier. That film went on to win multiple Oscars and became Paul Thomas Anderson’s highest-grossing movie with $213.2 million worldwide.
The Heart of the Beast nears $100 million
Paramount’s The Heart of the Beast continued its run with a $32.5 million worldwide weekend, including an $11 million second weekend in the United States. Its overseas second frame brought in $21.5 million from 66 territories, lifting the global total to $98.7 million.
France remained its leading second-weekend market, generating $3 million and holding No. 1 after a 17% decline. Its French total reached $7.6 million. Mexico also stayed at No. 1 with $2 million, down 17%, for a cumulative $5.1 million.
The United Kingdom added $1.6 million for a $5.5 million total, while Spain and Australia each produced $1.1 million during the weekend.
