Tom Cruise will receive the 52nd AFI Life Achievement Award, placing the actor and producer in a select group of filmmakers honored by the American Film Institute for their lasting contributions to cinema.

AFI will celebrate Cruise with a gala tribute at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on April 24, 2027. The organization’s Board of Trustees selects one recipient each year for the honor, which recognizes artistic achievement, career longevity and work embraced by scholars, critics, industry peers and audiences.

“Tom Cruise is a global icon,” AFI Board of Trustees chair Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. “As an actor and producer, he brings an extraordinary commitment to everything he does. What I especially admire is his deep belief in movies and their ability to bring people together.”

Kennedy also described Cruise as “an extraordinary ambassador for American film around the world,” adding that AFI was honored to present him with the award.

A Five-Decade Film Career

The recognition arrives after more than five decades of work by Cruise as an actor, producer and philanthropist. His movies have collectively generated nearly $13 billion at the worldwide box office.

His screen career includes “Risky Business,” “Top Gun,” “Minority Report,” “Interview With the Vampire,” “A Few Good Men” and “The Firm,” as well as the “Mission: Impossible” films.

Cruise’s acting performances have brought him three Oscar nominations. He received best actor nods for “Born On The Fourth of July” and “Jerry Maguire,” followed by a supporting actor nomination for “Magnolia.” More recently, he was nominated as a producer of “Top Gun: Maverick,” which competed for best picture.

The actor is currently starring in “Digger.” He is also set to appear alongside Anne Hathaway in the next chapter of “Days of Thunder,” scheduled for release in 2028.

AFI’s Roster of Honorees

Cruise follows Eddie Murphy, who was the previous recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award. Honorees from the past decade also include Francis Ford Coppola, Steve Martin, John Williams, Diane Keaton, George Clooney, Denzel Washington, Julie Andrews and Nicole Kidman.

The award is considered AFI’s highest career honor in film. Its annual selection process is designed to acknowledge not only individual talent, but also a body of work that has advanced the cinematic arts and maintained broad recognition over time.

ShowBiz Take

Cruise’s selection brings together the different measures AFI uses to define a life achievement: longevity, industry recognition and audience reach. His filmography stretches across more than five decades, his work has received acting and producing recognition at the Oscars, and his films have approached $13 billion in global ticket sales.

The timing also makes this more than a retrospective moment. Cruise remains active on screen with “Digger,” while the announced “Days of Thunder” project extends his upcoming slate into 2028. The 2027 tribute will therefore honor an established body of work while Cruise continues adding to it.

What Happens Next?

AFI’s gala honoring Cruise is set for April 24, 2027, at Hollywood’s Dolby Theater. After that ceremony, his next announced project is the new chapter of “Days of Thunder” with Hathaway, due to arrive in 2028.
