Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily halted as director Matt Reeves steps away to deal with a family matter.

Warner Bros and DC Studios confirmed the pause in a statement released Monday, offering their support for the filmmaker while indicating that work on the sequel is expected to continue.

“Production on The Batman Part II has been temporarily paused while Matt Reeves focuses on a family matter,” the studio said. “Matt has the full support of DC Studios and we look forward to continuing the journey soon.”

No date for the resumption of production was included in the statement.

The pause comes after filming had already begun in London. The movie is scheduled to open on February 18, 2028, although sources say it is still too early to determine whether the production stoppage will affect that release date.

Returning stars and new additions

Robert Pattinson is returning as Batman, with Andy Serkis once again playing Alfred and Colin Farrell reprising his role as Penguin.

The sequel is also adding several actors to its ensemble. Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch are among the new cast members.

The temporary shutdown puts the focus on when Reeves will be able to return and how the interruption may shape the film’s production schedule. For now, the studio has characterized the situation as a pause rather than a permanent change and has publicly backed the director.

What Happens Next?

Production is expected to continue after Reeves’ family matter is addressed, but a restart date has not been announced. The film remains set for February 18, 2028, while any potential impact on that date remains uncertain.
