Adam Lambert delivered the surprise finale to a wide-ranging George Michael tribute at the 2026 VMAs, joining previously announced performers Sombr, Raye and Teddy Swims for a celebration that moved well beyond Michael’s landmark Faith era.

Lambert had not been announced for the Sunday night performance before emerging from backstage to sing “Freedom.” His arrival capped a hit-filled sequence that also included music from Michael’s work with Wham!, his duet with Aretha Franklin and several songs from the 1987 album Faith.

The tribute was staged nearly 40 years after Faith was released and ahead of two projects celebrating its tour: a live album arriving Nov. 6 and a feature-length film opening in U.S. theaters Dec. 11.

A tribute spanning Michael’s catalog

Orville Peck introduced the performance before Sombr opened with “Faith.” Sombr wore Michael’s customized leather jacket from the Faith period, which Michael had worn during the Faith tour and in a Diet Coke commercial.

As Sombr moved across the stage, screens showed footage of Michael from the “Faith” video. The performance then shifted into another track from the album, “Father Figure.”

Raye took over for “I Knew You Were Waiting,” Michael’s duet with Franklin. Her solo interpretation was presented with golden lighting, smoke and sepia-toned images of Michael, expanding the segment beyond material from Faith.

A saxophone player then delivered the recognizable opening to the Wham! hit “Careless Whisper.” Teddy Swims performed the song from a platform surrounded by searchlights before Lambert made his unannounced entrance for the closing number.

Lambert’s “Freedom” finale gave the tribute its last surprise and completed a musical journey through multiple periods of Michael’s career, including the later single “Freedom ’90,” known for its supermodel-filled music video.

Celebrating the Faith era

Michael released Faith in 1987. Along with its title track and “Father Figure,” the album produced the singles “I Want Your Sex” and “One More Try.”

“Father Figure” also had another connection to the 2026 ceremony. Fellow VMAs honoree Taylor Swift reimagined the song on her latest album, The Life of a Showgirl. An Encore edition arrived Friday with four additional tracks, including “Patient Zero.” Swift released the “Patient Zero” video during the awards show and received the inaugural MTV VMA Artist Director Honor.

The tribute also recalled Michael’s own history with the VMAs. He won four VMAs during his career and received the Video Vanguard Award in 1989.

Michael died of heart failure at age 53 over the Christmas holiday in 2016. The 2026 performance took place less than a decade after his death and served as both a retrospective of his hits and a lead-in to the forthcoming releases centered on the Faith tour.

The participating performers had additional ties to this year’s ceremony. Raye, who also gave a solo performance of her song “WHERE IS MY HUSBAND!,” received two nominations. Sombr was up for three awards. Swims previously appeared on the VMA stage in 2024, when he was a four-time nominee, and is scheduled to release his next album, Ugly, on Jan. 22, 2027.

A night of major music honors

Snoop Dogg hosted the 2026 VMAs from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony aired live coast-to-coast on CBS and MTV and streamed in the United States on Paramount+ Premium.

The Michael celebration was one of several major tributes and honors during the show. Kacey Musgraves led a tribute to Dolly Parton, while Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award.

What Happens Next?

The focus on Michael’s Faith period will continue later this year. The live album celebrating the tour is set for release Nov. 6, followed by the feature-length film’s U.S. theatrical opening on Dec. 11.
