Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will return for its second and final season in March 2027, setting a release window for the concluding chapter of the cadets’ story.

The timing was announced Saturday during the Star Trek Universe panel at New York Comic Con. The presentation also brought two notable additions to the show’s guest cast: Bill Nighy and Rosemarie DeWitt.

Nighy, whose credits include Living and About Time, will portray Nyk Ake, the estranged father of Nahla. DeWitt, known for Untamed and The Staircase, will play Tarima’s mother, Laytha Sadal, who is the First Lady of Betazed.

Both guest stars appear in newly released images from the upcoming season. Several other first-look photos from Season 2 were also unveiled alongside the casting and premiere news.

Cadets Begin Their Second Year

The final season will follow the cadets into their second year aboard the USS Athena, where their ideas about leadership, friendship, romance and morality will face fresh challenges.

The season’s story will involve emerging rivalries, uncertain diplomatic negotiations and a fiercely contested schoolwide tournament. Another major complication comes with the appearance of a mysterious new cadet whose very existence prompts questions with potential consequences extending well beyond the classroom.

Those developments continue the series’ coming-of-age framework. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy centers on a new class of Starfleet cadets learning what it takes to become officers while operating under the demanding supervision of their instructors.

Along the way, the young characters contend with developing friendships, intense rivalries and first loves. The broader story also includes a new enemy threatening both the Academy and the Federation.

The New York Comic Con panel featured series star Holly Hunter, as well as Sandro Rosta, Bella Shepard, Karim Diané and Robert Picardo. Co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau also took part.

CBS Studios produces the series in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

ShowBiz Take

The March 2027 window gives Starfleet Academy a defined destination while confirming that its sophomore season will also be its last. That makes the second-year storyline more than a routine progression for the cadets: it must carry the show toward its conclusion while testing the relationships and principles established by its central premise.

Nighy and DeWitt’s roles also bring the focus directly into the families of Nahla and Tarima. Nyk Ake’s estrangement from his daughter and Laytha Sadal’s position as First Lady of Betazed provide two distinct personal dimensions for the final season, while the diplomatic negotiations and mysterious new arrival point to conflicts reaching outside ordinary Academy life.

The combination of family ties, school competition and potentially far-reaching questions surrounding the new cadet gives the final season several connected pressures to explore. With the USS Athena serving as the setting for the cadets’ second year, their education will continue amid both intimate concerns and threats with implications beyond the classroom.
