Major spoilers for all seven seasons of “Sons of Anarchy” follow.
With an estimated 300-plus deaths shown on screen, “Sons of Anarchy” left few major players untouched by its escalating cycle of betrayal and revenge. The most consequential losses stretch from Luann Delaney’s offscreen murder in Season 2 to Jax Teller’s final ride in the series finale.
The early casualties
Luann Delaney — Season 2, Episode 8, “Potlatch”: Luann (Dendrie Taylor), wife of imprisoned SAMCRO member Otto Delaney, is found dead beside a road after clashing with rival adult-film producer Georgie Caruso (Tom Arnold). Georgie admits in Season 4 that he ordered his men to rough her up, but claims her death was unintended.
Kip “Half-Sack” Epps — Season 2, Episode 13, “Na Trioblóidí”: Cameron Hayes (Jamie McShane), falsely led by ATF agent June Stahl to blame Gemma for his son Edmond’s death, targets Jax’s family. Half-Sack (Johnny Lewis) is fatally stabbed while trying to protect Tara and baby Abel, whom Cameron kidnaps. Creator Kurt Sutter later said the heroic exit was written after Lewis asked to leave his contract.
David Hale — Season 3, Episode 1, “SO”: During Half-Sack’s memorial, Calaveras members launch a drive-by attack. Deputy Chief Hale (Taylor Sheridan) is run over by the fleeing van. The death was written after Sheridan left amid a pay dispute; he subsequently moved into writing and producing, including “Yellowstone” and “Landman.”
Cameron Hayes — Season 3, Episode 2, “Oiled”: After fleeing to Belfast with Abel, Cameron confesses Half-Sack’s murder to Father Kellan Ashby (James Cosmo). The True IRA retaliates for his actions against SAMCRO, and another member strangles him after Ashby gives him a blessing.
June Stahl — Season 3, Episode 13, “NS”: Stahl (Ally Walker) believes she has secured a career-making arrest of Jimmy O’Phelan (Titus Welliver) through a deal with Jax. Instead, Jax, SAMCRO and Wayne Unser turn the arrangement against her. Chibs kills Jimmy O, while Opie uses a submachine gun to execute Stahl in her car, echoing the Season 1 murder of his wife, Donna. The scene is then arranged to resemble an IRA attack.
Clay’s betrayals reshape the club
Piney Winston — Season 4, Episode 8, “Family Recipe”: Piney (William Lucking) uses letters from Jax’s late father, J.T., to pressure Clay Morrow over the club’s direction and allegations surrounding J.T.’s death. Clay ambushes Piney at home, kills him with Piney’s shotgun and attempts to blame the Lobos Sonora Cartel.
Herman Kozik — Season 4, Episode 11, “Call of Duty”: Kozik (Kenny Johnson), a former Marine who transferred from the Tacoma charter, steps on a Lobos Sonora landmine during an attack. At the time, Johnson had also taken a larger role on NBC’s “Prime Suspect.”
Opie Winston — Season 5, Episode 3, “Laying Pipe”: After deliberately getting arrested alongside Jax, Chibs and Tig, Opie (Ryan Hurst) faces Damon Pope’s demand that one Son die so two others can leave prison. Opie sacrifices himself and is beaten to death by inmates as Jax watches.
Season 6’s devastating turning point
Otto Delaney — Season 6, Episode 4, “Wolfsangel”: Otto (Kurt Sutter), already brutalized in prison by Lee Toric (Donal Logue), receives a shiv from the incarcerated Clay. Otto tricks Toric into believing he will provide information, stabs him to death and is then shot by prison guards.
Clay Morrow — Season 6, Episode 11, “Aon Rud Pearsanta”: With Clay (Ron Perlman) expelled from SAMCRO and imprisoned, the club pretends to assist his escape. The plan instead gives the Sons an opportunity to kill Clay and True IRA gunrunner Galen O’Shay. Clay helps stage the scene before Jax shoots him.
Tara Knowles-Teller — Season 6, Episode 13, “A Mother’s Work”: Jax agrees to turn himself in so Tara (Maggie Siff) can remain free, but Unser inadvertently leaves Gemma believing Tara betrayed her son. An intoxicated Gemma attacks Tara at home, attempts to drown her and kills her with a fork.
Eli Roosevelt — Season 6, Episode 13: Roosevelt (Rockmond Dunbar) returns with Juice and tells Gemma that Tara did not inform on Jax. As he prepares to seek backup, Juice shoots him twice in the back. Sutter later noted that the exit coincided with Dunbar becoming a series regular on “The Mentalist.”
The final season’s body count
Bobby Munson — Season 7, Episode 9, “What a Piece of Work Is Man”: August Marks (Billy Brown) kidnaps and tortures Bobby (Mark Boone Junior) in retaliation for Jax’s coalition against him. During a proposed transfer, Marks executes Bobby in front of Jax.
Juice Ortiz — Season 7, Episode 12, “Red Rose”: After revealing that Gemma killed Tara, Juice (Theo Rossi) receives only limited mercy from Jax: a quick death. Inmate and SAMCRO ally Ron Tully kills him in prison.
Wayne Unser — Season 7, Episode 12: Nero sends Unser (Dayton Callie) to protect Gemma by taking her into custody. Unser confronts Jax and makes clear that he will die before allowing Gemma to be killed. Jax shoots him in the chest.
Gemma Teller Morrow — Season 7, Episode 12: Resigned to Jax’s revenge, Gemma (Katey Sagal) asks to spend her final moments in her garden. She reassures her distraught son that killing her is the only possible outcome, and Jax shoots her. She dies without disclosing her own role in J.T.’s death.
Charles Barosky and August Marks — Season 7, Episode 13, “Papa’s Goods”: Jax settles unfinished business before facing punishment for killing fellow charter president Jury White. He shoots former ally Barosky (Peter Weller) inside Barosky’s bakery, then guns down Marks outside a courthouse.
Jax Teller — Season 7, Episode 13: Jax (Charlie Hunnam) accepts responsibility for his actions and persuades SAMCRO to vote unanimously for his execution. He places his children with Nero and Wendy, then uses his public killings to draw police into a motorcycle pursuit. At the place where his father died, Jax releases his handlebars and allows an oncoming truck, driven by Michael Chiklis’ character, to hit him head-on.
ShowBiz Take
The power of these deaths is not simply their number, but the way each one drives the next. Luann’s murder helps destroy Otto; Piney’s death exposes Clay; Tara’s killing triggers the bloodshed that consumes Bobby, Juice, Unser, Gemma and ultimately Jax. By the finale, the Teller family’s legacy of violence has collapsed under the weight of its own reprisals.
What Happens Next?
Jax’s ending rules him out of the show’s spinoffs, but Hunnam and other cast members are working on “Legends,” described as a meta-thriller sequel series. No further details are confirmed in the supplied record.
