Duncan Sheik has been hospitalized and is receiving medical care, according to a statement posted to the singer’s Instagram page on Wednesday.

The update described Sheik, known for songs including the Grammy-nominated “Barely Breathing,” as being in “critical but stable condition.” No additional medical details were disclosed.

“We would like to share an update with Duncan’s fans and the public,” the statement read. “Duncan is currently receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition. Out of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time.”

The message also asked for privacy as Sheik continues treatment. “We kindly ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time and will provide updates when appropriate. Thank you for the continued love and support,” the statement concluded.

Recent posts had referenced hospital stays

The announcement follows recent social media posts from Sheik that referenced time spent in the hospital. Earlier this month, he shared a post captioned, “Sorry for the selfies. But I’m still bored in hospital.”

On Aug. 20, Sheik posted a photo with another hospital-related caption, writing: “I would prefer to be home making music. But a bit of reflection is not too bad … boring hospital stays have their benefits (outside the obvious).”

The statement shared Wednesday did not elaborate on the nature of Sheik’s condition, and specifically said further medical information would not be released at this time out of respect for Sheik and his family.

Musical projects remain on the calendar

The health update arrives shortly before the scheduled debut of “Memoirs of Amorous Gentleman,” a new musical adaptation of Moyoco Anno’s manga graphic novel. Sheik wrote the score for the production, which is set to begin previews on Sept. 25 ahead of an Oct. 15 opening.

Sheik is also closely associated with “Spring Awakening,” for which he composed the music. A revival of the show is set to begin previews off-Broadway this fall.

“Spring Awakening” debuted in 2006 and ran for 859 performances. Its cast included Lea Michele, Jonathan Groff, Skylar Astin, John Gallagher Jr. and others. The production won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show was last revived in 2015.

What happens next?

For now, the only confirmed update is that Sheik remains under medical care in critical but stable condition. The Instagram statement said updates will be provided “when appropriate,” while asking fans and the public to respect the family’s privacy.
