Rajinikanth’s “Jailer 2” is moving from its record-setting theatrical run to Prime Video, with the action-crime sequel scheduled for a worldwide streaming premiere on Nov. 12.
The film has grossed $86 million so far, making it the highest-grossing Tamil-language movie of all time. Prime Video described its theatrical performance in India and overseas as record-breaking.
Beginning Nov. 12, “Jailer 2” will stream in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam and Kannada in India and across more than 240 countries and territories. The original “Jailer” is already available on the platform, bringing both chapters of Muthuvel Pandian’s story together in one streaming home.
Rajinikanth Returns as Muthuvel Pandian
Nelson Dilipkumar directs the sequel, with Kalanithi Maran producing through Sun Pictures. Rajinikanth reprises his role as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, the retired prison officer at the center of the franchise, while Anirudh Ravichander provides the score.
“Jailer 2” continues from the conclusion of the first film. This time, a politically connected crime syndicate with an international reach threatens Muthuvel’s family and pulls him out of retirement. As old adversaries return and new alliances take shape, Muthuvel is left to protect his family and restore order on his own.
Nelson said the sequel was designed to expand on the audience’s response to the character while raising the scale of the story.
“The response to ‘Jailer’ was extraordinary, and the love audiences have shown for Muthuvel Pandian has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey,” the director said. “With ‘Jailer 2,’ we wanted to build on that special connection while taking the story, action, scale, and emotional stakes to an entirely new level.”
A Cross-Industry Ensemble
The sequel surrounds Rajinikanth with a wide-ranging cast drawn from across Indian cinema. Mohanlal, Hrithik Roshan, Vijay Sethupathi and Shivarajkumar make cameo appearances.
The larger ensemble includes SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Ramya Krishnan, Namo Narayana and Yogi Babu.
Nelson also highlighted the combination of Rajinikanth’s return, the ensemble and Ravichander’s music as key elements of the new chapter.
“Having Rajinikanth sir reprise his iconic role as Muthuvel Pandian, alongside such a formidable ensemble cast, with Anirudh’s music adding its own distinctive energy, made this chapter particularly exciting for us,” he said. “Following the film’s spectacular theatrical response, we’re delighted to bring ‘Jailer 2’ to Prime Video, where it will join ‘Jailer,’ taking both chapters of Muthuvel Pandian’s story to audiences in India and across the world.”
ShowBiz Take
The streaming launch arrives with “Jailer 2” already holding a major box-office distinction. Its $86 million total places it above every other Tamil-language film to date, while also strengthening Rajinikanth’s position on the all-time Tamil chart.
Rajinikanth now occupies the chart’s top three spots: “Jailer 2” ranks first, followed by “2.0” and the original “Jailer.” Another of his films, “Coolie,” stands at No. 5.
That context makes the Prime Video debut more than a routine post-theatrical release. The platform is adding the new all-time Tamil box-office leader while already carrying its predecessor, allowing viewers to stream the franchise’s continuing story in sequence. The five-language rollout and availability in more than 240 countries and territories also extend the sequel’s reach beyond the theatrical audiences that contributed to its record-setting total.
What Happens Next?
“Jailer 2” will join “Jailer” on Prime Video on Nov. 12. Its confirmed release will make both Muthuvel Pandian films available together to viewers in India and around the world.
