The “Point Break” follow-up series is officially moving ahead at AMC and AMC+, with an eight-episode first season ordered and production planned to begin in early 2027.

The modern television update of the 1991 action film comes from lead studio Alcon Television Group, with AMC Studios and StudioCanal co-producing. StudioCanal, a Canal+ company, will also handle international sales and worldwide distribution outside the U.S. and Canada.

The project had previously been reported as being in development at the network in December 2025. The series order now puts the new “Point Break” firmly on AMC’s slate, with the show positioned as a continuation set more than three decades after the events of the original film.

According to the series logline, “More than three decades after the events of the original ‘Point Break’ film, a new heist crew inspired by the Ex-Presidents has emerged and the FBI must rely on a mysterious ex-pro surfer with a checkered past to infiltrate them.”

A new creative team takes on the Ex-Presidents legacy

Dave Kalstein and Christopher C. Rogers will serve as co-showrunners and executive producers on the series. Alcon co-founders and co-CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson are executive producing, along with Alcon Television Group head Ben Roberts and Julia Cohen.

For StudioCanal, M-K Kennedy, Paul Gilbert and Daniel Gratton are overseeing the project. Steven Johnson, Diego Piasek and Gene Hong will serve as co-executive producers, with Emily Yoshida and Ben Cook attached as supervising producers.

Dan McDermott, chief content officer of AMC Global Media and president of AMC Studios, framed the pickup around the film’s enduring audience and the creative approach for the new series.

“Start with one of the most entertaining and unforgettable action films ever made, add a powerhouse creative team and producing partners, massive fan interest that has been clear from the moment we announced the series was in development and you get a greenlight we could not be more excited about,” McDermott said. “Dave Kalstein and Chris Rogers have created a story and characters that honor the legacy of the film and will bring a new generation of Ex-Presidents to the world.”

Kalstein and Rogers also emphasized the personal significance of the original film in a joint statement.

“‘Point Break’ was the movie that rocked our worlds forever,” they said. “It was this wild cinematic sermon on friendship, outlaws, and spirituality that struck our souls. As we got older, we realized it hit millions of people the same way. ‘Point Break’ is more than just a movie—it’s a way of looking at the world. We are so honored to be carrying this legacy forward with Alcon, AMC, and StudioCanal. We’re putting together a series that will inspire audiences everywhere to seek The Ultimate.”

The film that started it

The original “Point Break” starred Keanu Reeves as rookie FBI agent Johnny Utah and Patrick Swayze as Bohdi, surf king and leader of the Ex-Presidents. Lori Petty and Gary Busey also starred. In the years since its release, the film has become a cult classic.

The new AMC and AMC+ series is not the first attempt to update “Point Break” for a new era. A 2015 remake starred Luke Bracey as Johnny and Édgar Ramírez as Bohdi. That film performed moderately well at the box office, but was widely rejected by critics upon release.

Johnson and Kosove said the team behind the series has a clear take on the material.

“We’re excited to see ‘Point Break’ move into production with AMC,” they said. “Dave and Chris have a strong vision for the series and a clear understanding of what makes this world so compelling. We’re looking forward to working closely with AMC and the creative team to bring this series to audiences.”

Kennedy, managing director for StudioCanal Worldwide Television, pointed to the global reach of the property and the company’s partnership with AMC Studios and Alcon Television Group.

“The opportunity to ride this legendary wave with AMC Studios and Alcon Television Group, bringing this globally beloved IP to Canal+ subscribers and audiences around the world was beyond compelling,” Kennedy said. “We can’t wait to get started!”

What happens next?

The “Point Break” order arrives during a busy stretch for AMC. The network is also at work on the NASCAR series “Thunder Road,” starring Dennis Quaid, and is preparing to launch the final season of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon,” which will debut in 2027. AMC also recently aired the Silicon Valley drama “The Audacity.”

For “Point Break,” the next confirmed milestone is production, which is slated to begin in early 2027. The first season will consist of eight episodes.
