Pierce Brosnan is not naming names in the ongoing James Bond casting conversation — and he suggests the eventual choice may not be one of the familiar contenders at all.
In a recent interview with The Times, Brosnan, who played 007 in four films between 1995 and 2002, weighed in on the search surrounding Denis Villeneuve’s forthcoming James Bond film. Asked about the next actor to take on the role, Brosnan said there are “lots of good hats in the ring” and “lots of great actors” being considered.
But the former Bond also left room for a surprise.
“I see it. I follow it,” Brosnan said. “They could probably just go left-field and pick someone that none of us know about.”
Brosnan stopped short of endorsing any specific performer. “I wouldn’t pick anyone,” he told The Times. “My wife told me not to say anything and I’ve said too much. Because once I say something it goes [everywhere] and I get hanged.”
The Bond Search Is Still Unconfirmed
The next Bond remains one of the most closely watched casting decisions in movies, and the source material makes clear that no final casting has been confirmed for Villeneuve’s forthcoming film.
Amazon MGM Studios previously enlisted casting director Nina Gold to find the new secret agent. Gold’s credits include the Netflix series “The Crown,” five films in the Star Wars franchise, “Les Misérables,” “The Martian” and “Conclave.” In 2025, she was nominated for an Oscar for her work on “Hamnet.”
Several actors have been reported as among those in the final running, including Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Harris Dickinson and Jack Lowden. Brosnan’s comments, however, underline that even with those names in circulation, the eventual choice has not been publicly settled.
Brosnan Says He Is Now Watching as a Fan
Brosnan also made clear that his own relationship with Bond has shifted. Despite having played the character across four films, he told The Times that he has not revisited his Bond movies since their release.
“I have no desire to see myself in Bond,” he said. “I’m just a member of the audience now awaiting the next Bond and wishing him well.”
The actor has addressed the franchise before. In August 2025, while speaking with Radio Times, Brosnan joked about the idea of returning as an older Bond if Villeneuve had a concept for it.
“I don’t think anyone wants to see a craggy, 72-year-old Bond, but if Villeneuve had something up his sleeve I would look at it in a heartbeat,” Brosnan said at the time. “Why not? It’s great entertainment. It could be lots of laughs. Bald caps, prosthetics… who knows?”
For now, Brosnan appears content to observe the process from the outside. His latest remarks add another layer of intrigue to a casting race that remains officially unresolved: recognizable names may be in the mix, but the former 007 is not ruling out a completely unexpected new face.
