Pet Shop Boys are turning the life of Alan Turing into an eight-part musical narrative with A man from the future, a concept album scheduled to arrive at midnight through Parlophone Records.
As reported by Billboard, the British electro-pop duo’s latest project traces defining moments in the life and death of Turing, the English mathematician and logician widely regarded as the father of modern computing.
Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe produced the album with Sven Helbig, combining electronic music with Helbig’s string arrangements. Those orchestral passages are performed by the Manchester Camerata Octet, while Juliet Stevenson delivers spoken excerpts from Andrew Hodges’ book Alan Turing: the Enigma.
A Long-Gestating Musical Memorial
The album arrives after more than a decade of development. Tennant and Lowe originally wrote the work with Hodges in 2012 and 2013, shortly before the theatrical release of The Imitation Game, which featured Benedict Cumberbatch as Turing.
Pet Shop Boys later performed selections from the work during a BBC Prom at London’s Royal Albert Hall in July 2014. For its album release, the project has been updated, reworked and rearranged with additional electronic material, new text and fresh orchestrations by Helbig.
A man from the future follows Turing’s story in chronological order. Its early chapters cover his school years, his developing interests in mathematics and science, and his realization of his sexuality. The narrative then moves through his time at Cambridge and his leading role in British Government efforts to unlock encrypted messages created by Germany’s Enigma machine during World War II.
The album also addresses Turing’s place in the invention of the digital computer and his prediction of Artificial Intelligence. Its later sections confront his trial and conviction over a homosexual relationship, before ending with his suicide in 1954.
Pet Shop Boys described the work as a tribute to a figure whose accomplishments were followed by persecution.
“Our motive in creating this work was to make a musical memorial to Alan Turing who gave so much to his country and the world and was rewarded for it by being prosecuted for his sexuality,” the duo said in a statement.
They continued: “Alan made a massive contribution to the defeat of Germany in World War II and was a pioneer of computing, imagining a world with intelligent computers. He also looked forward to a time when being gay would be accepted as normal. In both his professional and private lives, he was ahead of his time.”
The Follow-Up to Nonetheless
The release follows Pet Shop Boys’ 2024 album Nonetheless, which reached No. 2 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart.
Across their U.K. chart history, the duo has accumulated 22 top 10 singles, including four No. 1 hits. They have also placed 10 albums in the U.K. top 10, with 1993’s Very reaching No. 1.
In the United States, Pet Shop Boys have made 12 appearances on the Billboard Hot 100. Five of those songs reached the top 10, while 1986’s “West End Girls” climbed to No. 1.
ShowBiz Take
A man from the future stands apart as a project shaped over years rather than created for a single performance or moment. Material first written in 2012 and 2013, and heard in part at the 2014 BBC Prom, has now been expanded into a complete album with revised text, electronics and orchestration.
Its importance also rests in the breadth of the story Pet Shop Boys have chosen to tell. The album does not restrict Turing’s legacy to his wartime work. Instead, it connects his scientific ideas, his role in computing, his prediction of Artificial Intelligence and the treatment he endured because of his sexuality. By bringing electronics, strings and spoken text together, the duo has built its memorial around both Turing’s achievements and the personal cost that followed them.
