Paapa Essiedu is refusing to let a wave of online hostility dictate his portrayal of Severus Snape in HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” series.

The actor has faced intense backlash from some fans opposed to a Black performer playing Snape, a character traditionally depicted as white. Online criticism has included comments describing Essiedu’s casting as “a disgrace” and attacking him for accepting the role.

Essiedu addressed the reaction in an interview with Time, emphasizing both his own connection to the material and his respect for the strong opinions surrounding it.

“I first came to this story through the books,” he said. “People have got a lot of feelings about this. Obviously, everyone’s got the right to their own opinions about whatever.”

Essiedu Is Focused on Bringing Depth to Snape

Rather than allowing the controversy to shape his performance, Essiedu said he is concentrating on the demands of playing a complicated character.

“I concentrate on the job at hand, which is to give as much humanity, as much depth, dimensions, layers, complexity to a character that has a lot of that,” he said. “That is my job, and it’s a privilege and it’s an honor to do it, and I look forward to being able to do it for a long time now.”

His comments draw a clear line between public debate over the casting and the work he intends to deliver on screen. While acknowledging that viewers are entitled to opinions, Essiedu is approaching Snape as a layered role requiring humanity and complexity.

Online Backlash Has Included Death Threats

The response has not been limited to criticism of HBO’s casting decision. In March 2026, Essiedu told The Sunday Times that he had received threatening messages, including one that read: “Quit or I’ll murder you.”

He also described encountering threats on social media. “If I look at Instagram I will see somebody saying, ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you,’” Essiedu said. “Nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job. I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t affect me emotionally.”

Those disclosures underscore the severity of what Essiedu has experienced. The controversy surrounding his casting has moved far beyond disagreements about how a familiar character should be portrayed, with the actor saying that the abuse has had an emotional impact on him.

Essiedu has nevertheless found support away from the harshest corners of the internet. Speaking with Variety, he said the people working on “Harry Potter” have stood behind him.

“The whole team has been so supportive of me,” he said.

He has also received an encouraging response from other viewers. “I’ve also been blown away by a lot of the support and well-wishes and excitement,” Essiedu added.

ShowBiz Take

Essiedu’s response matters because it keeps the focus on the difference between legitimate audience opinion and personal intimidation. He has not denied that “Harry Potter” inspires powerful reactions, nor has he suggested that fans cannot debate casting. Instead, he has described a professional goal: finding the humanity, depth and complexity within Snape.

At the same time, his account makes clear that the response has carried a real personal cost. Threats of violence are not ordinary casting criticism, and Essiedu’s admission that the messages affect him emotionally gives the controversy a more serious dimension.

The support he says he has received from the show’s team, alongside positive messages from viewers, also provides an important counterpoint. The loudest online attacks do not represent the entirety of the reaction to his casting.

What Happens Next?

Essiedu will appear alongside Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid and John Lithgow as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. HBO’s “Harry Potter” series is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day 2026.

With the debut approaching, Essiedu’s stated priority remains the role itself: building a Snape with the dimensions and complexity he believes the character demands.
