Nirvana will be honored with the Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, set for Sept. 27 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.
The recognition places Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl’s trio in a rare VMAs category: Nirvana will be the first band to receive the honor since Duran Duran in 2003. It also marks the first time a band has received the award after disbanding since The Beatles, according to the announcement details.
MTV announced the news Wednesday, Sept. 9, tying the reveal to a key moment in the band’s awards-show history. “This day in 1992, Nirvana took to the VMAs stage for the first time — shaping music, culture and MTV forever,” MTV wrote in an Instagram post.
The network’s announcement referred to the prize as the Video Vanguard Award and did not include Michael Jackson’s name, which is sometimes attached to the honor and sometimes not. Nirvana and Jackson also share a notable Billboard chart footnote: in January 1992, Nirvana’s Nevermind displaced Jackson’s Dangerous from No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Nirvana’s Place in Vanguard History
Nirvana becomes the ninth band to receive the Video Vanguard Award. Previous band recipients are The Beatles in 1984, Bon Jovi in 1991, Guns N’ Roses in 1992, The Rolling Stones in 1994, R.E.M. in 1995, Beastie Boys in 1998, U2 in 2001 and Duran Duran in 2003.
The award also arrives with a deep VMAs history already attached to Nirvana’s catalog. The band won best alternative video three years in a row: “Smells Like Teen Spirit” in 1992, “In Bloom” in 1993 and “Heart-Shaped Box” in 1994.
Two of those videos also competed for the night’s top prize. “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was nominated for video of the year but lost to Van Halen’s “Right Now.” “Heart-Shaped Box” was also nominated for video of the year, losing to Aerosmith’s “Cryin’.”
Nirvana consisted of Cobain, Novoselic and Grohl. Cobain died by suicide on April 5, 1994. Novoselic is 61. Grohl, 57, later fronted Foo Fighters.
How to Watch the 2026 VMAs
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards will air live coast-to-coast on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 7:30-9:30 p.m. ET and 4:30-6:30 p.m. PT on CBS. The show will also be simulcast on MTV and stream on Paramount+ Premium in the U.S.
Globally, the ceremony will be available the next day on Paramount+ and MTV.
Nominations for this year’s VMAs were announced Aug. 18. Madonna leads the field with 11 nominations, followed by Taylor Swift with nine. Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter each have seven nominations, while Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson each have five.
With Nirvana set for the Vanguard honor, the 2026 VMAs will pair the year’s current nominees with a tribute to one of the most prominent video-era bands in the award’s history.
