Netflix has ordered a second season of Lock Upp: Sach Yaa Sazaa, bringing back the Indian “captive reality” series after its first season delivered a breakout run on the streaming service.
Riteish Deshmukh and Farah Khan will return as hosts for the new season, while Balaji Telefilms remains the producer. Creator Ekta Kapoor will produce alongside Shobha Kapoor and Manisha Sharma, with Malaya Pradhan returning as showrunner.
The renewal follows a strong performance for Season 1. Lock Upp reached No. 1 on Netflix’s TV shows list within two days of its premiere and stayed in the top 10 for seven consecutive weeks. Netflix said audience demand also prompted it to expand the weekly offering from five episodes to six.
The season ultimately generated 50 million hours viewed over the course of a month.
Back Inside the Jail
The format places Indian celebrities together in a jail cell, where they face a series of challenges. Beyond the competition, the first season drew attention for its more divisive participants discussing how they were perceived publicly and confronting the narratives that had developed around them.
Netflix says the second season will build on that setup, returning viewers to the jail as relationships change, personalities clash and secrets potentially alter the game.
Monika Shergill, VP of Content at Netflix India, described the first season as an immediate audience draw.
“Lock Upp: Sach Yaa Sazaa became appointment viewing overnight,” Shergill said. “Viewers invested, debated, and kept coming back. It captured the zeitgeist — not just as entertainment, but also as a space where celebrities talked about topics they rarely do, owned their choices and confronted past trauma.”
Shergill credited Kapoor’s homegrown concept and its expanded Netflix adaptation for the show’s impact, adding that Season 2 will aim to recreate that response while delivering “many new surprises” for viewers.
Kapoor, Joint Managing Director at Balaji, said the Netflix edition exceeded the team’s expectations and continued resonating after its finale.
“The conversations, the inmates, and their most memorable moments continued to live with audiences even after the finale,” Kapoor said. “That’s what makes the return of Lock Upp so exciting.”
She added that the next chapter will revisit the show’s established world while introducing “an entirely new set of stories, personalities, and surprises.” Deshmukh and Khan, she said, will continue leading the series as its “formidable jailer duo,” bringing their energy, unpredictability and on-screen dynamic back to the format.
From ALTBalaji and MX Player to Netflix
Lock Upp originally launched on ALTBalaji and MX Player in 2022. It was later rebooted for Netflix, where the first season’s rapid rise on the platform led to the expanded episode schedule and sustained top-10 presence.
The celebrity jail concept will remain at the center of Season 2, but the promised arrival of new personalities and stories means the interpersonal mix inside the jail is set to change. The returning creative and hosting teams will provide continuity as Netflix and Balaji Telefilms attempt to build on the audience engagement generated by the previous season.
