Neil Patrick Harris is heading back to Broadway in a new revival of Damn Yankees, set to begin performances in spring 2027.

The Tony-winning actor will play the devilish Mr. Applegate, with Julianne Hough starring as his seductive assistant, Lola, and Austin Scott taking on the role of young baseball player Joe Boyd.

Harris, Hough and Scott announced the production during a Sunday press conference at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, giving the baseball-centered musical an appropriately themed launch.

Previews will begin at Broadway’s Marquis Theatre on March 24, 2027, one day before the Yankees’ first game of the season. The production’s official opening night is scheduled for April 20.

A New Version of the 1955 Musical

Sergio Trujillo will direct and choreograph the revival, which updates the 1955 musical comedy by Richard Adler, Jerry Ross, George Abbott and Douglass Wallop.

The new staging will feature a revised book by Will Power and Doug Wright, along with additional lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. Further casting is expected to be announced soon.

This version of Damn Yankees moves the story to 2000. Scott’s Joe Boyd is presented as an impassioned Baltimore Orioles fan who wants another opportunity for both himself and his team.

Joe makes a deal with the charming Lola in pursuit of that second chance, but he is not prepared for the consequences that follow. Hough’s Lola serves as the alluring assistant to Harris’ Mr. Applegate, placing the three announced stars at the center of the updated story.

The revival brings together a prominent trio for its leading roles while retaining the musical’s baseball-driven premise. Harris will embody the production’s devilish dealmaker, Hough will play the figure who draws Joe toward the bargain, and Scott will portray the susceptible player and fan caught up in its effects.

What Happens Next?

The production has more than a year to complete its company ahead of the first preview on March 24, 2027. Additional cast members have not yet been named, though announcements are expected soon.

Following the preview period at the Marquis Theatre, Damn Yankees will officially open on Broadway on April 20, 2027.
