About the Movie
Professor Se-jeong is thrust into a bloody nightmare when a rapidly mutating virus is released during a biotech conference causing authorities to seal the facility. Trapped inside with no escape, Se-jeong along with a small group of survivors must fight to stay alive while the infected undergo horrific transformations.
Our Review
Colony gives the zombie genre an intriguing hook by imagining infected creatures capable of communicating and learning together. That idea immediately creates a more organized threat than the usual wave of anonymous undead, and it gives the film room to explore what happens when survival becomes a collective problem.
The movie is at its best when it combines that concept with tightly controlled action. The enclosed environments and rapidly changing alliances create a tense atmosphere, and the Korean setting gives the film a distinct identity.
Colony ultimately does not push all of its ideas as far as its premise suggests it might. Some of the social themes remain familiar, and the film occasionally feels like it is reaching for a larger statement than the story can fully support. Still, there is enough invention here to make it a worthwhile addition to the modern zombie cycle.
