Meta has unveiled a new generation of VR glasses designed to combine streaming entertainment, live sports and productivity tools in one device. The Meta VR Glasses are scheduled for release in spring 2027 with a $1,300 price tag.
The company says the hardware will “define a new era for virtual reality,” promising access to movies, television and sports through a wide lineup of services and apps. Prime Video, YouTube, Peacock, HBO Max, Paramount+, DIRECTV, AMC+, Crunchyroll, Plex and Tubi are among the entertainment options announced for the device.
Sports offerings will include the NBA, MLB, ESPN, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC, with some content receiving virtual or 3D enhancements. Meta says its TV app will offer “the best media lineup of any VR device,” including selections from the 3D catalogs of Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+.
A Theater-Sized Screen in a Lighter Package
Viewers will be able to watch movies, shows and sports on virtual screens described as “theater-sized.” The glasses will also support video chats and an app-based work environment similar to the experience of using a phone.
Navigation will not depend solely on traditional handheld controls. Users will be able to operate the Meta VR Glasses through hand gestures or by directing their eyes toward icons displayed on the screen.
The new frames bear a resemblance to Apple’s Vision Pro, but Meta’s design takes a split-device approach. The glasses themselves handle the display and sensors, while a separate pocket-sized unit known as the “puck” manages computing, storage and battery functions.
An optical tether connects the two components. The puck can be placed inside a pocket or bag, or clipped onto one, shifting some of the hardware away from the wearer’s head. Meta says the resulting glasses are five times lighter than their predecessor, the Meta Quest 3.
Disney+ Brings 3D Movies to Meta Quest
Disney+ is also joining Meta’s expanding VR entertainment plans before the new glasses arrive. Through a partnership with the streaming service, Disney+ subscribers will be able to watch movies including The Avengers and Black Panther in 3D on Meta Quest headsets.
The Disney+ experience will feature themed immersive viewing spaces connected to Disney franchises. Announced environments include Tatooine and Avengers Tower.
Meta is separately expanding its movie marketplace. Hundreds of films are due to become available to rent or purchase on Meta Quest later this year, with the selection expected to reach thousands of titles by the Meta VR Glasses launch in spring 2027.
The planned catalog will eventually include 3D films from Lionsgate, along with blockbusters from James Cameron and Lightstorm Vision being offered in 3D for the first time.
Live Sports Get an Immersive Upgrade
Sports will be another major part of the device’s media pitch. Apps from the NBA, MLB and ESPN are set to be available, while ESPN will introduce an experience called “Immersive Sports.”
That offering is billed as providing “a front-row seat, 8K streaming, and 180-degree views.” It will begin with college football on Meta Quest this year, followed by additional sports in 2027.
When the Meta VR Glasses launch, the company plans to offer more than 100 immersive live sporting events each year through MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports and UFC.
What Happens Next?
Meta’s entertainment rollout will begin ahead of the hardware’s spring 2027 debut, with Disney+ 3D streaming, ESPN’s college football experience and hundreds of rental and purchase titles coming to Meta Quest this year. By the time the $1,300 glasses arrive, Meta expects its movie library to contain thousands of titles alongside its streaming, sports and productivity options.
