Snoop Dogg’s life story is taking shape on the big screen, with Jonathan Daviss set to portray the rapper in Universal Pictures’ upcoming biopic, Snoop. Myles Bullock will play Dr. Dre, while Camron Jones has been cast as 2Pac.
The film is scheduled to open in theaters across the United States on Aug. 6, 2027. Snoop announced at CinemaCon in Las Vegas in April that production was already underway.
Craig Brewer, whose credits include Hustle & Flow and the 2025 film Song Sung Blue, will direct. 8 Mile producer Brian Grazer is producing alongside Snoop.
“After my brothers told their story in Straight Outta Compton, it’s my turn,” Snoop said at CinemaCon, referring to N.W.A’s 2015 biopic.
Jonathan Daviss Leads a Growing Cast
Daviss, also known as JD, is best known from Outer Banks. His casting gives him the central role in a film that is already assembling actors to portray figures from Snoop’s family life and music career.
Bullock, a BMF star, will appear as Dr. Dre. The two artists collaborated on tracks including “Nuthin’ But a G Thang” and “Still D.R.E.” Jones, meanwhile, will portray 2Pac, who became a close friend of Snoop’s during the 1990s when both were faces of Death Row Records.
Lauren London has been cast as Snoop’s mother, Beverly Tate. London previously appeared in the 2004 music video for “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” Laya DeLeon Hayes will play Snoop’s wife, Shante Broadus. Snoop and Shante married in 1997 and share three children. Celebrating her casting on Instagram, Hayes wrote, “Dream come true. Beyond honored to bring this story to life.”
The film will also depict Snoop’s early Long Beach connections. Algee Smith will play Warren G, Snoop’s childhood friend who helped him get discovered by Dr. Dre. Smith previously portrayed Ralph Tresvant in BET’s The New Edition Story.
Corey Champagne has been cast as Nate Dogg, Snoop’s older cousin and collaborator on songs including “Ain’t No Fun (If the Homies Can’t Have None).” Nate Dogg died in 2011 at age 41. Bentley Green will play another of Snoop’s cousins, RBX, who joined Snoop as a guest on “Stranded on Death Row” from Dr. Dre’s The Chronic.
The Death Row Era Comes Into Focus
Tre Hale will portray Death Row Records co-founder Suge Knight, who brought Snoop to the label in 1992. Hale plays Andy on the Apple TV+ series Platonic. Knight is currently serving a 28-year sentence after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter charges stemming from a fatal 2015 hit-and-run.
Jonica Booth will play The Lady of Rage, who was part of the Death Row roster and appeared on Snoop’s debut, Doggystyle. Olly Sholotan, who starred as Carlton in the Bel-Air reboot, will portray Kurupt. Kurupt worked with Snoop early in his career and formed Tha Dogg Pound with Daz Dillinger.
G Perico has been cast as Big Reecie Cup, described as the muscle who protected Snoop during his rise in Long Beach. Zachariah Rogers will play The D.O.C., who mentored Snoop and helped him develop as a songwriter. Rogers, a Tennessee native, is known for playing Pico in P-Valley.
The Notorious B.I.G. will be portrayed by SwayvoTwain, the son of D’Angelo and Angie Stone. Although Biggie and Snoop were on opposing sides of the East Coast-West Coast rivalry, they remained allies, and Snoop appeared on all three of B.I.G.’s posthumous albums.
Cynthia Erivo will play 2Pac’s mother, Afeni Shakur, a political activist and member of the Black Panther Party. Additional casting includes Hercy Miller as Master P, who signed Snoop to No Limit Records in 1998 following the rapper’s split from Death Row. Miller is moving into acting after playing college basketball at several schools, including the University of Louisville.
Tyquan Givens, also known as Watts Homie Quan, will appear as an original character named B. Mack. Givens appeared in the Snowfall spin-off The Drop and starred in the first season of The Vince Staples Show in 2024.
ShowBiz Take
The casting makes clear that Snoop is being built around more than one performer’s rise. By including Snoop’s relatives, childhood friends, mentors, collaborators and figures from both Death Row and No Limit Records, the film is positioned to cover several important relationships and stages of his career.
It also places Snoop in a line of rappers whose stories have reached film, including 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., Eminem, N.W.A and 50 Cent. More than 30 years into his career, Snoop continues to release music and has also worked as an Olympics correspondent and co-hosted a cooking show with Martha Stewart.
What Happens Next?
With production in motion and the principal cast continuing to expand, Snoop is now headed toward its confirmed Aug. 6, 2027, U.S. theatrical release.
