Mary Louise Weller, the actress who played sorority queen Mandy Pepperidge in the 1978 comedy Animal House, died October 1 following a brief illness. She was 79 and died one day before her 80th birthday.

Weller’s turn as Mandy was a key supporting role in director John Landis’ early-1960s college story. The character is the girlfriend of Greg, the president of a fraternity rivaling Delta Tau Chi, but she also has a fling with Delta member Otter, played by Tim Matheson.

As the queen bee of the Pi sorority, Mandy figures prominently in the movie’s climactic homecoming parade. While riding on a float, she is abducted by John “Bluto” Blutarsky, John Belushi’s pirate-clad Delta character.

The film’s epilogue gives their unexpected pairing a final comic twist. Mandy is shown cuddling with Bluto as the two leave in a convertible, with the characters identified as Senator and Mrs. Blutarsky.

Her Career Before and After ‘Animal House’

Born October 2, 1946, in New York City, Weller began building her screen résumé with bit parts in two movies and guest appearances on the television dramas Kojak and Baretta. She subsequently landed the role of Mandy in Animal House, which became the most prominent film performance among her credits.

Weller continued working across television and movies after the 1978 comedy. Her TV appearances included episodes of Starsky & Hutch, The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries, B.J. and the Bear and Vega$.

She also appeared twice on Fantasy Island and twice on CHiPs. Across her career, Weller accumulated two dozen additional film and television credits beyond Animal House.

Her movie work in 1982 included three features. She co-starred opposite Chuck Norris in the crime thriller Forced Vengeance and also appeared in Bloodtide and Q: The Winger Serpent that same year.

Weller’s final credited screen appearance came in 1983, when she appeared in an episode of the Jack Klugman-led crime drama Quincy, M.E.
