Madonna and Charli xcx are swapping stories from the dance floor on “Danceteria Afterhours,” a newly revamped version of Madonna’s “Danceteria.”
The original track appeared on Confessions II, Madonna’s album released July 3. While Madonna’s verses remain in place for the new edition, Charli contributes fresh material retracing formative moments from her own years in club culture.
Together, the two artists use the song to connect different eras and cities through their personal histories in nightlife.
Madonna and Charli revisit their club beginnings
On the original “Danceteria,” Madonna recounts her early experiences in New York City and explores the history of Danceteria, the famed city club where she got her start. The song also recalls time spent there with fellow party figures including Debi Mazar and Basquiat.
“Danceteria Afterhours” retains that account before expanding the track with Charli’s perspective. Her new verses stretch from her first DJ set in London, when she describes herself as “sweet 15 in a weird outfit,” to a trip to Los Angeles in 2015.
Charli also references spending time with A.G. Cook and SOPHIE during that Los Angeles chapter, along with encountering “different DJs, flavored cocaine.” The added lyrics turn the updated recording into a shared retrospective, with Madonna and Charli each looking back at the scenes and people connected to their development.
The collaboration is the latest “Afterhours” reworking to emerge from the Confessions II era. Madonna previously released a new version of “Love Sensation” featuring Kylie Minogue.
Confessions II delivered a chart milestone
Released on July 3, Confessions II debuted at No. 1 on the main U.S. albums chart. It became Madonna’s first chart-topping album of the 2020s.
The debut also established a wider chart distinction: Madonna became the first act to score a No. 1 album in the 2020s after previously reaching the top of the chart in three other decades.
“Danceteria Afterhours” now extends the album’s club-focused world by pairing Madonna with another artist recounting her own path through nightlife. Rather than replacing Madonna’s original narrative, the new recording keeps it intact and adds Charli’s recollections alongside it.
What Happens Next?
Madonna’s next major appearance is set for the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Sept. 27. She will open the ceremony, marking her first performance on the show in 23 years.
She also enters the event as its leading nominee, with 11 nominations. This is the first time Madonna has led the VMA field since 1998, the year she won video of the year for the first time with “Ray of Light.”
For now, “Danceteria Afterhours” brings Madonna and Charli xcx together around a common subject: the club spaces, collaborators and defining nights that shaped their respective stories.
