Hilary Duff has stepped into the topsy-turvy world of Dr. Seuss with “CATastrophe,” an original song created for Warner Bros. Pictures Animation’s upcoming theatrical adaptation of The Cat in the Hat.

The pop star released the track Friday, Oct. 2, alongside a music video filled with colorful, oversized settings inspired by the whimsical visual style associated with Seuss. The video places Duff inside a succession of heightened worlds that match the song’s playful connection to the mischievous title character.

Duff co-wrote “CATastrophe” with her husband and frequent collaborator Matthew Koma, as well as Madison Love and Brian Phillips. Koma and Phillips also produced the song.

Pop energy meets sudden upheaval

While “CATastrophe” was written for a family animated movie, its central idea reaches beyond the film. The song explores the disorienting experience of having life change suddenly, before a person feels prepared or has any control over what is happening.

Duff said Dr. Seuss books were a regular presence in her childhood home, making the opportunity to contribute music to the new movie an easy decision. She wanted to contrast the feeling of having one’s world rearranged without permission with an upbeat pop song designed to be played in the car.

That theme also connects directly to the story of the forthcoming movie. Bill Hader stars as the famed Seussian troublemaker, with the Cat attempting to help siblings Gabby and Sebastian adapt after moving to a new town.

Matt Berry, Quinta Brunson, Xochitl Gomez, Giancarlo Esposito and America Ferrera are also among the film’s voice cast. The movie will be Warner Bros. Pictures Animation’s first full-length theatrical feature.

Another chapter in Duff’s musical return

“CATastrophe” arrives during a major year for Duff’s music career. Earlier this year, she released Luck… Or Something, her first studio album in more than a decade.

The 11-track project debuted at No. 3 on the albums chart. That result gave Duff her sixth top 10 album on the chart and marked her highest position there since 2007.

Her return has also moved beyond new studio recordings. After nearly two decades away from full-scale touring, Duff launched the Lucky Me tour this year, combining her Y2K-era hits with newer material for audiences around the world.

The tour has been extended through 2027. Duff is also set to receive the Outstanding Pop Tour of the Year award at a 2026 live music summit in November.

With “CATastrophe,” Duff is now taking that comeback into a different kind of setting—one built around talking animals, outsized surroundings and the Cat’s unmistakable red-and-white hat.

What Happens Next?

The Cat in the Hat (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), which includes Duff’s new song, is scheduled for release Oct. 30. The film will follow one week later, arriving in theaters and IMAX on Nov. 6.
