Warner Bros. has set Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest for release on June 1, 2029, placing the fantasy feature at the start of that summer’s movie calendar.
The studio, which is set to be taken over by Paramount, has enlisted Owen Harris to direct the film. Oscar-nominated screenwriter Beau Willimon is writing the screenplay.
No cast members have been announced, and there is not yet any confirmed information about when production will begin.
Aegon I Set to Take Center Stage
The movie reportedly focuses on Aegon I, the first Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and the founder and first king of the Targaryen dynasty. The royal family sits at the center of the wider Game of Thrones franchise.
Known as Aegon I the Conqueror, the character united Westeros with the dragons Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes. If the project moves forward as planned, it would be the first on-screen depiction of Aegon I.
Aegon’s Conquest will expand the screen universe drawn from George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire. Beyond the core HBO franchise, Martin’s fantasy novels have also provided the foundation for two spinoff series, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
A Rare Firm Date on the 2029 Calendar
Warner Bros.’ decision gives Aegon’s Conquest a prominent position during the first weekend of June, at a point when relatively few major-studio releases have been publicly locked into the 2029 calendar.
While the year includes numerous untitled studio placeholders, only two other named films currently have firm dates: Disney and Pixar’s Coco 2, scheduled for Nov. 21, and Disney and 20th Studios’ Avatar 4, dated for Dec. 21, 2029.
What Happens Next?
The June 1, 2029 release date establishes the long-range plan for the feature, but major production details remain unresolved publicly. Casting information and a production start date have yet to be revealed.
