HBO is not boosting Booster Gold to a series order anytime soon.
Writer David Jenkins (Our Flag Means Death) posted Friday that his version of the DC Comics adaptation is not moving forward at HBO.
“My Booster Gold won’t be moving forward,” Jenkins wrote on Threads.
Jenkins added, “Can’t improve on Mahershala’s lovely statement so I’ll just apply it here as well.”
The writer then re-posted Mahershala Ali’s viral comments calling out Marvel Studios for his Blade reboot not moving forward.
“For whatever reason, that project is not for me,” Ali had said. “If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it. So I have to move on, and I have moved on. Again, you had me under contract, they have billions of dollars, if they wanted to do the movie, we would’ve done the movie. I feel ready to move on from the Blade questions. Those questions are for them. They didn’t want to do it, so they should answer that question.”
Booster Gold was first announced in development in 2023. Jenkins was attached to write the pilot last year.
In the comics, the Booster Gold character’s real name is Michael Jon “Booster” Carter, who starts off as a football-playing college student from Gotham City. Booster is expelled for gambling and becomes a superhero but continues to annoy others with his obsession for fame and wealth. The character is also a member of the Justice League.
DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran had previously said the series version would be “a loser from the future who uses his basic future technology to come back to today to pretend to be a superhero,” while co-chief James Gunn called the project a story about “a superhero’s imposter syndrome.”
HBO had no immediate comment. Previously, DC’s The Penguin series impressed in the ratings and racked up awards honors awards. Next up is Lanterns, coming Aug. 16, which impressed the crowds at Comic-Con earlier this month with a new trailer and several clips. There have also been two seasons of Peacemaker, though Gunn has suggested he does not plan to make a third season. There’s also a second season coming for the animated series Creature Commandos.
Other DC projects in development at HBO include Paradise Lost — a Wonder Woman prequel set on Themyscira, which Gunn said in April is still in the works. Also, Waller, starring Viola Davis, was previously announced in development.
