Celine Dion delivered a heartfelt remote performance of John Farnham’s 1986 hit “You’re the Voice” during an all-star celebration of the Australian singer’s songs and career on Sunday, Sept. 20.

Dion appeared midway through Songs of John Farnham: A Living Legend — The Celebration Concert, staged at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena and broadcast into Hoyts cinemas across Australia. Her song choice carried particular weight: “You’re the Voice” is regarded in Australia as an unofficial national anthem.

Speaking before the performance, the Canadian superstar explained why she could not join the celebration in person.

“Hello, everyone. I really wish I could be with you there tonight, to celebrate my dear friend John. But I am on my new stage in Paris this week,” Dion said. “You know, John, you’ve always been such a deep inspiration for me. I always loved to hear you sing.”

She went on to single out Farnham’s rendition of “You’re the Voice” as “one of my very, very favorite performances ever,” adding that the song is deeply meaningful to her.

A Song With Personal History

Dion and Farnham have shared the song before. In August 2018, Farnham joined her during a concert at Rod Laver Arena, where the two performed “You’re the Voice” together.

Revisiting that moment during her remote appearance, Dion told Farnham that singing alongside him had been both an honor and a joy.

“It was such an honor,” she said. “And at the same time, so much fun, to sing it with you. And that, my friend, is… eight years ago. I know, I think you know this one, very well.”

Farnham, 77, was unable to attend the tribute concert because of poor health.

Dion’s appearance came as she continues her own health battle. The singer has stiff person syndrome, a rare autoimmune neurological disorder that can cause muscle stiffness and painful spasms. She is currently performing a 16-date comeback residency at Paris’ Plenitude Arena.

More Than 120 Performers Celebrate Farnham

Dion was among more than 120 artists and musicians who took part in the celebration. The lineup also included Vanessa Amorosi, Tina Arena, Jimmy Barnes, Kate Ceberano, Diesel, Human Nature, Richard Marx, Jessica Mauboy, Jon Stevens, Keith Urban, Mark Vincent and Ross Wilson.

Chris Martin and Hugh Jackman also appeared as surprise guests.

The Rod Laver Arena concert sold out quickly, while representatives said more than 23,000 Farnham fans watched from Hoyts cinemas around Australia.

What Happens Next?

Strong demand has already secured another big-screen run for the concert. The show, produced by Cochrane Entertainment and TEG Dainty, will return to cinemas for an encore season featuring a re-edited version.
