Spotify is giving parents and guardians a new way to keep the family singalong from taking over their own listening identity.

Announced Tuesday (Sept. 15), the streaming service is rolling out a setting that lets users stop kids’ and family music from shaping their personal taste profile. For anyone whose Spotify Wrapped has been dominated by the Kidz Bop Kids, “Baby Shark,” animated-movie soundtracks, nursery rhymes or children’s TV theme songs, the update is designed to separate what children want to hear from what the account holder wants Spotify to treat as personal taste.

The feature is aimed at a familiar streaming reality: many parents use their own Spotify account to entertain the entire household. That can mean repeated plays of a child’s favorite soundtrack on road trips or the same requested song over and over again. Until now, those streams could feed directly into the account’s recommendations and listening history. With the new option, Spotify can keep that family listening from influencing the rest of the experience.

How the new Spotify setting works

When users switch off the option to include kids’ and family music in their taste profile, that listening will no longer be used for personalized recommendations, including Discover Weekly and Daily Mix. It will also be excluded from listening insights, including the year-end Spotify Wrapped recap.

The setting applies retroactively as well. If an account has already built up a large number of plays from a child’s favorite animated-movie soundtrack, those streams will not continue counting toward top songs or artists once the setting is turned off.

The update does not block access to children’s music. Parents and guardians can still search for kids’ songs, play them and add them to playlists. The difference is that those plays will not contribute to the taste profile Spotify uses to personalize the broader account experience.

The feature is rolling out globally on mobile for both Free and Premium users. It is turned on by default, so users who want children’s and family listening excluded from their profile will need to manually disable it.

How to change the setting

To adjust the option, users can open Spotify and tap their profile picture in the top-left corner. From there, they should go to “Settings and privacy,” then select “Content and display.” The relevant toggle is labeled “Include kids and family music in taste profile.”

Spotify says it can take up to 48 hours for the change to fully appear in personalized recommendations.

The new option arrives as part of Spotify’s broader family-focused controls. The company also offers tools that let listeners remove individual songs or playlists from influencing their taste profile, and its managed accounts are intended to give younger listeners their own more age-appropriate Spotify experience.
