Broadway’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is preparing for a substantial company change at the Lyric Theatre, with North American tour cast member Matt Harrington set to take over as Ron Weasley beginning November 10.
Harrington will remain in the role through January 31, 2027, succeeding Daniel Fredrick. His run will lead directly into another major Ron Weasley casting event: original Harry Potter film actor Rupert Grint is scheduled to reprise his screen role on Broadway beginning February 2, 2027.
Grint’s limited engagement will continue through May 30.
Jocelyn Maher will also join the Broadway production on November 10, making her Broadway debut as Ginny Potter. She succeeds Trish Lindstrom.
More Changes Coming in January and February
The production’s upcoming cast transition extends beyond Ron and Ginny. Tom Felton, another original Harry Potter film star, will continue playing Draco Malfoy alongside Aidan Close as Scorpius through January 3, 2027.
Ben Thys, who originated Draco in the North American tour, will assume the role on January 5. At that same performance, veteran Broadway company member Erik Christopher Peterson will return as Scorpius for a four-week engagement ending January 31.
Cody Combs will then make his Broadway debut as Scorpius Malfoy on February 2, the same date Grint begins his limited run as Ron.
Additional performers joining the company are Josh Bates, Markcus Blair, Danny Bó, Casey Butler, Erin Chupinsky, Lauryn Hayes, Jennifer Thiessen and Timmy Thompson.
Several principal cast members will remain with the production. John Skelley continues as Harry Potter, with Emmet Smith as Albus Potter, Rachel Christopher as Hermione Granger, Janae Hammond as Rose Granger-Weasley and Kristen Martin as Delphi Diggory.
The continuing company also includes Chadd Alexander, John Alix, Logan Becker, Darby Breedlove, Megan Byrne, Ted Deasy, Gary-Kayi Fletcher, Alexis Gordon, Logan James Hall, Chance Marshaun Hill, Jamie Jackson, Jay Mack, Bradley Patchett, Dan Plehal, Allie Re, Gabrielle Reid, Will Rhem Jr., Maren Searle, Tom Stephens, Khadija Tariyan and Baylen Thomas.
The Story Behind the Stage Production
Directed by John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is based on an original story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and Tiffany. The play takes place 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and centers on Harry’s headstrong son, Albus.
The original Broadway production received six Tony Awards, including Best Play.
ShowBiz Take
Harrington’s casting creates a clear bridge between the show’s North American tour and its Broadway company, while the announced schedule establishes a sequence of high-profile role changes extending into 2027.
The production is also drawing on several different parts of its history at once. Harrington and Thys arrive with North American tour connections, Peterson is returning after previously serving in the Broadway company, and Felton and Grint bring their association with the original films to the stage. At the same time, Maher and Combs are preparing to make their Broadway debuts.
Rather than changing the full company at once, Cursed Child will retain key performers including Skelley, Smith and Christopher while introducing its new cast members in stages.
What Happens Next?
The first round of changes begins November 10, when Harrington starts as Ron and Maher makes her debut as Ginny. Felton and Close remain through January 3, 2027, before Thys and Peterson step into Draco and Scorpius on January 5.
Harrington and Peterson conclude their engagements on January 31. Grint and Combs then begin as Ron and Scorpius on February 2, with Grint scheduled to remain through May 30.
