Paramount Pictures has put Brie Larson at the center of its feature adaptation of Rebecca Serle’s New York Times bestselling novel One Italian Summer, with the Room Best Actress Oscar winner set to star as Katy Silver and executive produce.
Harry Bradbeer, the filmmaker behind the Enola Holmes franchise, is set to direct the Temple Hill Entertainment production. Paramount has also dated the film for a theatrical release on Mother’s Day weekend, with the movie scheduled to open May 12, 2028.
Serle will executive produce the adaptation alongside David Stone of TFC Productions. The book was published by Atria.
One Italian Summer is set against the Amalfi Coast and centers on a young woman navigating a devastating loss. The story follows her as she receives an extraordinary chance to reconnect with her mother in a different way, setting off discoveries tied to love, life and self-understanding. The source material is described as a moving and magical story about the bond between mothers and daughters.
As of now, the only other title dated for Mother’s Day weekend 2028 in the supplied release calendar information is Warner Bros/New Line’s Final Destination 7.
Rebecca Serle’s Hollywood slate
The Paramount adaptation arrives as Serle’s work continues to move through film and television development. Her New York Times bestseller Expiration Dates is set up at Amazon MGM Studios, with Emma Roberts starring and Chelsea Bradshaw and Jessica Pugh’s Featherweight Pictures producing.
Another Serle title, Once and Again, is in early works at Apple Original Films, with Liz Tigelaar adapting. Serle also developed the TV adaptation Famous in Love, based on her YA series of the same name.
Larson and Bradbeer bring major screen credits
Larson’s recent and upcoming screen work spans major studio films, streaming television and voice performance. She starred in Disney/Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel, which grossed more than $1.1 billion at the global box office, and also appeared in Avengers: Endgame, cited in the source material as the second highest grossing movie of all time with $2.79 billion, as well as The Marvels.
On television, Larson headlined Apple TV+’s Lessons in Chemistry, earning Emmy, SAG, Critics Choice and Golden Globe nominations. She also voices Rosalina in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Her upcoming projects include FX’s Cry Wolf, Amazon MGM Studios’ Close Personal Friends and Sony’s Skeletons.
Behind the camera, Larson directed and produced Disney+’s Growing Up, Remembering and the Emmy-winning Messy Truth VR Experience. She made her feature directorial debut with Unicorn Store.
Bradbeer brings a deep television and film résumé to the Paramount project. As director and producer of Amazon’s Fleabag, he earned multiple Emmy, BAFTA, PGA, Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards. His television credits also include Killing Eve for BBC, Ramy for Hulu, The Hour for BBC, No Offence for Channel 4 and the BBC drama This Life.
Most recently, Bradbeer directed the first two episodes of Amazon’s Spider-Noir, starring Nicolas Cage. On the film side, he is currently in post-production on Netflix’s A Matter of Time, starring Ben Stiller and Nicholas Galitzine. He made his feature directorial debut with Enola Holmes for Legendary Entertainment and Netflix, starring Millie Bobby Brown, Henry Cavill and Helena Bonham Carter, and returned to direct Enola Holmes 2.
