Brad Pitt is back in action as Cliff Booth, with Netflix releasing the first images from David Fincher’s forthcoming feature The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth.

The newly unveiled stills place Booth in several very different settings. One shows Pitt wearing goggles as he steers a derby car around a dirt track. Another captures Booth talking with Elizabeth Debicki’s character at a bar, while a separate image brings Pitt, Debicki, Scott Caan and Carla Gugino together on a tennis court.

Netflix has also set a two-stage release for the movie. The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth will begin a two-week global Imax run on Nov. 25 before arriving on the streaming service Dec. 23.

Cliff Booth Faces a Changed Hollywood

Set in 1977, the new story takes place eight years after the events of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. It follows Booth as he attempts to come to terms with a Hollywood that has changed considerably since audiences last saw him.

Pitt reprises the stunt-double role he originated in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 Sony Pictures film. Leonardo DiCaprio co-starred in that movie as Western icon Rick Dalton.

Tarantino wrote the screenplay for The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, but Fincher is directing the project. Pitt and Ceán Chaffin serve as producers.

The cast surrounding Pitt includes Debicki, Caan, Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Peter Weller, Matt Groove, JB Tadena, Corey Fogelmanis and Karren Karagulian.

A trailer released online last month offered an earlier glimpse at Booth’s return, including one characteristically blunt line from Pitt: “Let’s just say I know what it’s like to kill someone with a knife.”

Tarantino Explains His Decision Not to Direct

Although Tarantino supplied the script, he has said he chose not to direct the follow-up because he does not want his next directing project—which he intends to be his last—to be a sequel.

Speaking last year on the Church of Tarantino podcast, the filmmaker described his mixed feelings about revisiting familiar territory.

“I love this script, but I’m still walking down the same ground I’ve already walked,” Tarantino said. “It just kind of unenthused me.”

His decision leaves Fincher in charge of Booth’s next screen chapter while retaining a screenplay written by the character’s original creator.

The Legacy Behind Booth’s Return

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which Tarantino wrote and directed, earned $377 million at the worldwide box office. It received 10 Oscar nominations and won two awards, including Pitt’s first acting Oscar.

The film remains well-regarded and also helped fuel the movie careers of supporting cast members Mikey Madison, Austin Butler, Sydney Sweeney and Margaret Qualley.

Against that history, the first images from The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth suggest that the follow-up will move Pitt’s character beyond the world audiences encountered in the original. The 1977 setting provides the central shift, with Booth now confronting a markedly different version of the industry he once navigated.

ShowBiz Take

The major creative hook is the handoff between two filmmakers: Tarantino remains responsible for the script, while Fincher takes over behind the camera. That arrangement allows Booth’s story to continue without requiring Tarantino to make the sequel his planned final directing effort.

Netflix’s release strategy is equally notable. Rather than moving directly to streaming, the company is giving the film a two-week global Imax engagement before its Dec. 23 debut on the platform. The combination of Pitt’s return, Fincher’s direction and Tarantino’s screenplay gives the project a clear connection to the original while establishing a new creative framework for Booth’s latest misadventures.

What Happens Next?

Audiences will first be able to see The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth in Imax beginning Nov. 25. After that two-week global run, the film will start streaming on Netflix on Dec. 23.
