Avengers: Endgame has reclaimed the worldwide box-office crown, moving past Avatar after a new theatrical run boosted its global total to $2.9255 billion.

The Disney/Marvel film now stands ahead of Avatar, which has earned $2.9237 billion worldwide. The change at the top comes entirely from the re-release Avengers: Endgame Encore, returning Anthony and Joe Russo’s film to the record books ahead of Avengers: Doomsday on Dec. 18.

This is not Endgame’s first stint as the biggest movie in global box-office history. At Comic-Con in 2019, it was announced that the film had surpassed James Cameron’s Avatar. The latest results have now put Endgame back in front once again.

The ‘Endgame Encore’ Numbers

The record-setting comeback arrived despite a steep second-weekend decline for Endgame Encore. After starting with $26.1 million and taking the No. 1 position, the re-release earned $4.4 million in its second weekend, a drop of 81%.

Its second global weekend delivered $18.8 million, including $14.4 million from 52 international territories. The re-release has now generated $126 million worldwide, divided between $36.2 million stateside and $89.8 million from overseas markets.

Those additional grosses have taken the full stateside total for Endgame to $894.6 million. That places the movie at No. 3 on the all-time domestic chart, behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day with $954.4 million and Star Wars: Force Awakens with $936.6 million.

Outside the domestic market, Endgame has reached a running total of $2.03 billion. That figure puts it at No. 2 on the all-time MPA international box-office list.

China and Latin America Power the Return

Endgame Encore ranked as the top non-local movie in China, where it earned $21.3 million. It also held that distinction in Indonesia, Vietnam, Ecuador and Bolivia.

The return engagement has become the highest-grossing re-release across Latin America, with Mexico contributing $6.1 million and Brazil adding $3.1 million. Colombia, Peru and Paraguay are among the other Latin American markets highlighted in its record-setting performance.

The re-release has also reached the same benchmark in Malaysia, India and Indonesia. Its total in India stands at $3.8 million.

Together, those results were enough to push Endgame beyond Avatar on the global leaderboard, even as the second weekend of Encore fell sharply from its opening.

What Happens Next?

The re-release is serving as a theatrical lead-in to Avengers: Doomsday, the Russos’ upside-down multiverse movie scheduled for Dec. 18.

Doomsday will face major competition that day from Paramount, Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Dune: Part Three. The head-to-head opening is expected to create another “Barbenheimer”-like weekend, placing two high-profile movies in theaters at the same time.
