The creative team behind Hong Kong animated feature Another World is developing a second theatrical project, Blacky the Metal Arm Cat, and taking the film to potential partners at Busan’s Asian Contents & Film Market.
Deadline reports that the 2D animated feature is being produced by two Hong Kong companies: Another World producer Point Five Creations and animation house Intoxic Studio. Veteran animator Nic Ho, whose credits include Mountains And Seas, is writing and directing the project, which is based on his short film.
Point Five’s Polly Yeung is spearheading the production, while Another World director Tommy Ng Kai-chung has joined as art director. Intoxic Studio’s Ivana Lai is co-producing.
A Fallen Warrior Enters a Hidden World
Blacky the Metal Arm Cat is set in Golden City, an ancient metropolis where a legendary warrior once known as “Golden Claw” is struggling after a devastating betrayal and fall from grace.
An enigmatic young mechanic saves him and creates a custom mechanical arm for him. When she suddenly vanishes, the warrior must journey into a mysterious underworld, where he confronts an alien presence as he attempts to bring her back.
The filmmakers describe the project as a mix of “high-stakes action, urban fantasy and imaginative world-building” that examines identity, resilience and human purpose.
Ho said the story’s central journey is rooted in recovering a sense of self rather than following a conventional transformation into a champion.
“Blacky is not a story about becoming a hero; it is a story about rediscovering yourself after loss,” the director said. “We live in an era where technology and society shift rapidly – where the skills or identities we took pride in can feel obsolete overnight. This film reflects that generation-wide feeling of loss through modern, action-packed storytelling, showing what it means to find a reason to keep moving forward.”
Yeung will introduce the project at ACFM to prospective co-producers, financiers and sales agents. The presentation follows her work guiding Another World from its beginnings as a short film into a theatrical feature.
Another World went on to become Hong Kong’s highest-grossing local animated feature of all time. It also won Best Animated Feature at Taiwan’s Golden Horse Awards.
Another World Is Also Expanding
Point Five Creations is simultaneously building out Another World beyond the original film. The company has partnered with Korean webtoon studio Creative SUMM on a webtoon expansion supported by Hong Kong’s CreateSmart Initiative.
Yeung is producing the webtoon with Creative SUMM, while SuperString Inc producer BeeWon Lee is serving as co-producer. Tommy Ng is supervising the project, and Yeung is co-writing its script with Eden Bernal.
The webtoon will center on Dark Sky, the fan-favorite Another World character described as a headless swordsman who operates as both an assassin and a guardian. It is intended to serve as the starting point for a wider transmedia expansion as Point Five Creations prepares future film and series installments in the franchise.
The CreateSmart Initiative is administered under Hong Kong’s Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency. Creative SUMM, led by CEO Cho Hea-seung, produced the webtoon The Red Sleeve, which amassed more than 100 million views and inspired an MBC television drama. Its other webtoons include Leafie, A Hen Into The Wild, Beauty Water and Underdog.
ShowBiz Take
Blacky the Metal Arm Cat arrives with meaningful momentum behind its creative team. The same collaborators who helped turn Another World from a short into a record-setting Hong Kong animated feature are now applying that experience to a new theatrical story with its own visual world and themes.
The project also forms part of a broader period of activity for Point Five Creations. While Blacky seeks international production, financing and sales partners, Another World is moving into webtoons and preparing additional film and series entries. Together, those developments show the company pursuing both an original feature and a larger future for its existing property.
What Happens Next?
